See Before You Open

Video Intercom Installation - Wired, Wi-Fi & App

A video intercom does something an audio unit never can: it lets you see who is at the gate before you decide to open it. Day or night, from an indoor screen or your phone, you get a clear view of the visitor - a courier, a contractor, a stranger - and the confidence to let them in or keep the gate shut. For most homes it is the highest-impact, best-value security upgrade available, and it pairs naturally with the gate you already have.

We handle the whole installation end to end: assessing your property, recommending the right system for your layout and budget, running the cabling, mounting the gate station and indoor screen, connecting the gate-motor relay, programming everything and demonstrating it to you. One team, from the free assessment to a fully-tested handover.

Because we are gate-automation specialists first, the part that trips up general installers - making the intercom reliably open your gate motor - is routine for us. The result is a system that does not just look good on the wall, but opens the gate every time, cleanly, with the units we recommend and stand behind.

Video Intercom

Types Of Video Intercom We Install

The right system depends on your property, your network, and whether you want a fixed indoor screen, your phone, or both.

Wired (2-Wire / 4-Wire)

A cable runs from the gate station to a dedicated indoor monitor. Rock-solid, with no dependence on Wi-Fi. Two-wire systems simplify retrofits; four-wire is common on older installs.

Wi-Fi / App-Based

The gate station connects to your home Wi-Fi and pushes a live-video call to a smartphone app, so you can see, speak and open the gate from anywhere - not just from indoors.

IP Video

Network-based systems (such as Hikvision) over data cabling, integrating with wider CCTV and access control - one connected system rather than separate gadgets.

Multi-Tenant Panels

A single entrance panel with video: a visitor selects a unit, the resident sees and speaks to them and opens the gate. Audio or video, wired or IP.

Intercom System Repairs - Video Intercom Guide

How a Video Intercom System Works

From visitor pressing the button to you seeing them on screen and opening the gate the complete process.

Visitor Presses Call

The visitor presses the call button on the outdoor gate unit. The unit immediately activates its built-in camera and begins transmitting live video to the indoor monitor or smartphone app.

Indoor Monitor Rings

The indoor handset screen lights up showing a live feed of the visitor at the gate. For Wi-Fi / IP systems, your smartphone app receives a push notification with the live video feed  even if you are away from home.

Two-Way Conversation

You pick up the handset (or answer in the app) and speak with the visitor through the two-way audio. Night vision on the outdoor unit ensures you can see the visitor clearly after dark critical for intercom security Gauteng properties.

Open Gate Remotely

Press the gate release button on the handset (or tap "Open" in the app). The intercom sends a relay signal to the gate motor, opening the gate. The entire process takes under 30 seconds from call to gate opening.

Brands We Repair

video intercom brands— Which Is Right for You?

We install and support the leading video intercom brands, and recommend the right one for your property rather than pushing a single make.

Hikvision

IP and two-wire video with strong app access - excellent for connected homes and estates wanting integration with CCTV.

Commax

Reliable, widely-used video handsets and gate stations - great value for residential homes and clusters.

BPT

Audio/video door entry strong for estates and apartment blocks, including multi-tenant panels.

Centurion

Gate-linked GSM and video-capable setups on Centurion-automated gates, integrated and tested.

Wired Vs Wi-Fi

Wired Vs Wi-Fi - Which Should You Choose?

Both are excellent; the right choice depends on how you live. The assessment confirms which performs best at your property.

Many clients choose a hybrid - an indoor screen and app access - for the best of both. We assess your Wi-Fi signal at the gate during the site visit and tell you honestly which option will perform best, rather than selling you the most expensive one.

Choose Wired

Maximum reliability and a fixed indoor screen, with no dependence on Wi-Fi coverage at the gate. The most robust option and the least affected by network issues - you answer from inside the house.

Choose Wi-Fi / App

Answer the gate from your phone wherever you are, with video and notifications on multiple family members' phones. The trade-off is a dependence on solid Wi-Fi reaching the gate and your home internet being up.

Video Intercom

Video Intercom + Gate Integration

The part people forget to ask about is the one that matters most: will it actually open your gate? Every gate motor has a trigger relay - a pair of terminals that, briefly bridged, open the gate. We connect the video intercom's gate-release output to those terminals so a press or a tap opens up, and we match the voltage to your specific motor so the command fires reliably.

We carry wiring diagrams for every common motor - Centurion (including D5, D5-Evo and D10 Smart), ET, Gemini, DTS and Nice - and test the open command against your actual gate before we leave. This is exactly why a gate specialist, rather than a general electrician, should install a gate-linked video intercom: the camera and screen are the easy part; the reliable gate-release is where the expertise earns its keep. A video intercom that shows a beautiful picture but won't open the gate is only half a system, and we do not leave one behind.

How We Install

Our Repair & Installation Process

From your first call to a fully working system — here's exactly what to expect when you book Paskwa for intercom repairs or installation in Gauteng.

Free Site Assessment

A technician visits your Gauteng property to inspect the fault or entry point, check cellular signal (for GSM), identify your gate-motor model for relay compatibility, and recommend the right fix. Free and no-obligation — usually within 24–48 hours, same-day for urgent faults.

Supply and Installation

We carry common parts on the vehicle — power supplies, batteries, handsets, relays, trigger cable and GSM units — so most intercom repairs in Gauteng are completed on the first visit. For installations we mount the unit, run cabling and connect the gate relay.

Programming and Testing

We programme numbers (GSM), test call and gate-release functions end-to-end, configure night vision or app access on video systems, and demonstrate everything to you. We test against your actual gate motor before we leave. We don't pack up until it works perfectly.

Estates · Complexes · Body Corporates

Homes, Estates & Complexes

For a single home we install a one-station, one-screen (or app) system linked to your gate, sized and sited for your property. For estates and complexes we install multi-tenant video panels, where a visitor selects a unit and that resident answers and admits them - with itemised, meeting-ready quotes for trustees and managing agents, and the option of IP panels that let residents answer on a smartphone app.

Estate work is planned and scheduled around the site, and we are comfortable working with bodies corporate on documented, accountable installations - including phased upgrades where a development wants to modernise an ageing panel without disrupting residents. Whether it is one gate or a hundred units, the standard is the same: the right unit, neat cabling, a reliable gate connection, and a system we support after handover.

Aftercare & Maintenance

A video intercom is outdoor electronics exposed to sun, dust, rain and Highveld lightning, so a little upkeep keeps it reliable for years. We fit surge protection on installation, and offer maintenance  Intercom Maintenance service for the detail.

And if a fault ever does develop, our repairs team supports everything we install - so you are never left searching for someone who understands the system. You deal with the team that fitted it, who knows exactly how it was wired and configured. That continuity is part of what you are buying: not just an installation, but a long-term relationship with one accountable contractor for the life of the system.

Why A Video Intercom Is The Best Security Upgrade For The Money

Of all the things you can spend money on to make a property safer, a video intercom gives one of the best returns - and it is worth being concrete about why. The core security problem at any gate is information: when someone presses to be let in, do you actually know who they are before you open? An audio intercom gives you a voice, which is easily faked or vague. A video intercom gives you a face, a uniform, a delivery vehicle, body language - the things that let you make a real decision rather than a hopeful one.

That single change - seeing before opening - closes the most common gap that opportunistic crime exploits: the gate opened to someone who claimed to be a courier, a meter reader, a contractor. With a clear day-and-night image at the gate, on a screen inside or an app in your pocket, the decision to open is an informed one. And because you can answer from your phone on a Wi-Fi system, you can manage the gate even when you are not home - useful for letting in a trusted visitor, or simply confirming who is at an empty house.

Set against alarms, cameras and electric fencing - all valuable, all more expensive - a video intercom is modest in cost and high in everyday impact, because it works at the one point everyone uses every day: the front gate. That combination of low cost and high, daily relevance is why we describe it as the best-value security upgrade for most homes, and why it is the installation we are asked for most.

System

Choosing The Right System For Your Property

The best video intercom is not the most expensive one - it is the one that fits how your property is built and how your household lives. A few questions settle it, and we walk through them at the free assessment so you buy what you need, not what carries the biggest margin.

How do you want to answer? If you want a fixed screen on the wall and maximum reliability, wired is the answer. If you are often out and want to answer from your phone, Wi-Fi or IP is the way. Many homes want both - a screen and an app - which we can do. How good is your signal at the gate? Wi-Fi only works as well as the network reaching the gate station, so we test it; if it is weak, we either improve it or steer you to a wired or GSM-video combination rather than selling you an app that will frustrate you.

One home, or many units? A single home wants a one-station system; a complex or estate needs a multi-tenant panel where visitors select a unit. And what else should it talk to? If you have or plan CCTV, an electric fence or access control, an IP system that integrates may be worth it; if you just want to see and open the gate, a simpler unit is the smarter spend. Our job at the assessment is to ask these questions honestly and recommend accordingly - because a system matched to your property is the one you will be happy with for years, and the one we are happy to guarantee.

FAQs

Video Intercom Installation — Common Questions

How much does video intercom installation cost?

Most video intercom installations run R2,500–R6,500 depending on the system and cabling. Retrofits reusing existing cable are at the lower end; IP systems and multi-tenant panels are quoted after a site visit. The quote is firm and includes the gate-motor connection.

Can you reuse my existing intercom cabling?

Often yes. If you have an old audio or video intercom, we can frequently reuse the existing cable run for the new unit, which keeps the cost down. We'll confirm during the free site assessment.

Can I answer my video intercom on my phone?

Yes, with a Wi-Fi or IP system — the gate station pushes a live-video call to a smartphone app and you open the gate from the app, from anywhere. We'll check your Wi-Fi signal at the gate to make sure it performs well.

Will the video intercom open my gate?

Yes — we connect it to your gate motor's trigger relay and test it on your actual motor before we leave. We carry wiring diagrams for Centurion, ET, Gemini, DTS and Nice motors.

Does a video intercom work during a power cut?

With a backup battery, yes — the unit keeps working for several hours off-grid. Your gate motor needs its own backup battery too; we recommend fitting both for seamless access.

Do you install a unit I've bought myself?

We can, though we usually recommend supplying the unit so we can guarantee the whole system. If you've already bought one, send us the model and we'll confirm we can install and support it.

How long does installation take?

A typical single-home install takes a few hours including cabling, gate connection, programming and a handover demo. Multi-tenant and IP installs are scheduled around the site.

Do you install across all of Gauteng?

Yes — we install across Johannesburg and Pretoria from our Sandton base. Areas close to us get the quickest scheduling; for further areas we book a prompt site visit.

Do you service Urmet, Legrand or Elvox intercoms?
Yes. We repair Urmet, Legrand and Elvox two-wire video intercom systems, which are common in older Sandton estates and complexes built in the 1990s and 2000s. We replace handsets, door stations, power supplies and re-cable risers on these systems. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll confirm parts availability before we arrive.
Why is my Commax or Centurion intercom not working?
The usual culprits are power and wiring: a surge-damaged supply, a flat backup battery, corroded connectors, or a failed handset or camera on the gate station. Commax and Centurion units are reliable but exposed to weather, lightning and power surges. We diagnose the exact cause rather than guessing at parts.
Does a GSM Intercom Work with My Centurion Gate Motor?

Yes. All GSM intercoms connect to the trigger relay terminals on your Centurion gate motor (or any other gate motor brand). When you press 9 on your phone, the intercom sends a brief short-circuit signal to these terminals, triggering the gate to open. Repairs Plus connects and tests this integration as part of every GSM intercom installation.

How Many Phone Numbers Can a GSM Intercom Call?

Standard GSM intercoms support 1–10 registered numbers. Any of these numbers can answer the call and press 9 to open the gate. Some advanced models support up to 100 numbers useful for cluster complexes. We recommend the model with the right capacity for your situation. Ask us when you call for a quote.

What's the difference between wired and Wi-Fi video intercoms?

A wired system feeds a fixed indoor screen and is the most reliable, with no dependence on your network. A Wi-Fi system sends the call to a phone app so you can answer from anywhere, but relies on solid Wi-Fi at the gate. Many clients choose both.

Does the video intercom have night vision?

Yes - the systems we install include night vision on the gate-station camera, so you can clearly identify a visitor after dark, which is exactly when it matters most for security.

Can a video intercom integrate with my CCTV or electric fence?

Often yes. As access-automation specialists we can tie the video intercom into a wider setup - CCTV, electric fencing and access control - so it forms part of one connected security system rather than a standalone gadget.

Is a video intercom worth it over a cheaper audio one?

For most homes, yes. Seeing a visitor before you open the gate is a genuine security upgrade an audio unit cannot offer - day or night, from a screen or your phone. It is the single highest-impact intercom upgrade for the money.

Do I need home internet for a video intercom?

Only for the Wi-Fi and app features. A wired video intercom with an indoor screen works with no internet at all. A Wi-Fi unit needs your home network to push calls to your phone, so we check the signal at the gate before recommending it.

Can you install a video intercom on my existing gate motor?

Yes - that is the norm. We connect the video intercom's gate-release to your existing motor's trigger relay, whatever the brand, so the new intercom opens the gate you already have. No need to change the motor.

What maintenance does a video intercom need?

Very little - an occasional lens wipe, and a periodic check of the connections, backup battery and surge protection. We fit surge protection at installation and offer maintenance visits to keep it reliable through storm season; see our maintenance service for detail.

Can a video intercom integrate with my gate, electric fence and CCTV?

Often yes - an IP system in particular can tie into a wider access-and-security setup, so the gate intercom, electric fencing and cameras form one connected system. We assess what you have and recommend a unit that integrates, if that is what you want.
