Gate Intercom Repairs
Gate Intercom Repairs By Gate Specialists
Gate Intercom Repairs — A gate intercom has to do two things: let you talk to a visitor, and open the gate. When either fails, you need someone who understands both the intercom and the gate motor it controls. That's us. We repair gate intercoms of every make across Johannesburg, Pretoria and Gauteng — and because we're gate-automation specialists first, the integration faults that stump general installers are our everyday work

Intercom And Gate, One System
Gate Intercom Repairs - Done By Gate Specialists
Most companies that fix intercoms don't really understand gate motors, and most gate companies treat the intercom as an afterthought. The result is the classic runaround: an "intercom person" who can't get your gate to open, and a "gate person" who won't touch the intercom. Because we do both, you get one team that fixes the whole chain - the gate station, the wiring, the indoor handset or GSM/video unit, and the trigger link to the motor that actually opens the gate.
That matters because the most common gate-intercom fault - rings but won't open - lives exactly at the join between the two. It is not an intercom fault and not a motor fault; it is the connection between them, which is precisely the thing a single-discipline contractor is least equipped to diagnose.
Eighteen years of gate automation is what we bring to it. We carry trigger wiring for every common motor, test the open command against your actual gate, and fix audio, video, power and integration faults in one visit - so a gate intercom that has been half-working for months is sorted properly, usually the same day.
Detailed Fault Guide
Gate Intercom Faults We Repair
If your gate intercom is misbehaving, it almost certainly falls into one of these - and we fix all of them.
Rings But Won't Open the Gate
What you see: the Gate intercom calls you (or the indoor handset rings), audio works, but pressing the gate button — or 9 on a GSM unit — does nothing. Real cause: in nine out of ten Gauteng call-outs this is the trigger circuit, not the intercom itself: a corroded or rodent-chewed 2-core wire between the intercom and the gate-motor relay, a failed relay contact, or a voltage mismatch between the unit's trigger output and the motor's input. What we do: trace the trigger run with a multimeter, repair or re-run the wire, replace the relay if needed, and re-test the open command against your actual gate motor.
Dead After a Power Surge
What you see: the system worked fine, then went completely dead after a storm or a power cut — no lights, no dial tone, no call. Real cause: Highveld lightning and grid switching push surges down the mains and the gate line; the intercom's power supply (PSU) takes the hit, or a backup battery that has been cycled flat for months finally gives out. What we do: test the PSU output voltage, replace the surge-damaged supply or battery, check the board survived, and fit surge protection so the next storm doesn't repeat the damage. Most of these Gate intercom repairs in Gauteng run R450–R900.
No Sound / One-Way Audio
What you see: total silence, or you can hear the visitor but they can't hear you (or vice-versa). Real cause: a failed microphone or speaker in the gate station — the outdoor unit is exposed to Highveld sun, dust and rain and usually fails first — corroded connectors on the 2-core audio pair, or a break in the cable run. What we do: isolate whether it's the gate station, the handset or the cable, then replace the failed component and clean or re-terminate connectors. R350–R1,000 depending on the part.
Video Screen Is Black or Snowy
What you see: the handset powers up but shows no picture, a snowy image, or video that drops out intermittently. Real cause: a failed camera module in the gate unit, a damaged or water-ingressed video cable, or a power fault starving the camera. What we do: test the camera feed at the source, replace the camera or the affected cable section, and re-commission night vision so after-dark identification works again. R800–R2,500.
GSM Won't Call or Won't Open
What you see: visitors press call and your phone never rings, or it rings but pressing 9 won't open. Real cause: no airtime/data on the SIM, weak cellular signal at the gate (common in deep-set Gauteng properties), a de-registered SIM, a DTMF detection fault, or broken trigger wiring. What we do: check signal strength and SIM status, swap SIM or network for the strongest gate signal, re-programme numbers, and verify the open command end-to-end. R350–R1,800.
Complex Panel: One Unit Down
What you see: the handset powers up but shows no picture, a snowy image, or video that drops out intermittently. Real cause: a failed camera module in the gate unit, a damaged or water-ingressed video cable, or a power fault starving the camera. What we do: test the camera feed at the source, replace the camera or the affected cable section, and re-commission night vision so after-dark identification works again. R800–R2,500.
Intercom And Gate, One System
The Integration Advantage
Here is the heart of why a gate intercom should be repaired by a gate specialist. Every gate motor has a trigger relay - a pair of terminals that, briefly bridged, open the gate. Your gate intercom's job, when you let a visitor in, is simply to bridge those terminals: directly, on a wired handset, or by detecting the 9 tone on a GSM unit. The intercom never opens the gate itself; it asks the motor to.
Getting that connection right - the correct terminals, the correct voltage, a sound wire - is the difference between an intercom that reliably opens your gate and one that "rings but does nothing". And it is exactly the part a general installer is most likely to get wrong, because it requires knowing how a Centurion, ET, Gemini, DTS or Nice controller expects its trigger input.
For us, that connection is not a puzzle solved on your time - it is routine. We test the open command against your actual motor on every gate-intercom repair, so you do not get the unit "fixed" only to find the gate still won't budge. The intercom and the gate leave working as one system, because to us they always were one system.

Repair Or Replace?
Gate Intercom Repair Or Replace?
The default is always repair, and on a gate intercom that is right far more often than not - because a gate intercom is rarely a single sealed device. It is a gate station, an indoor handset or GSM/video unit, a power supply, and the wiring and relay that link it to your motor. When something fails, it is usually one of those parts, and replacing that part is a fraction of the cost of a whole new system.
A surge-damaged power supply, a corroded trigger wire, a failed gate-station speaker, a tired backup battery - each is an affordable, same-visit fix that gives the system years more life. Even a failed camera or handset is usually cheaper to replace as a component than to scrap the whole installation. The economics overwhelmingly favour repair.
We recommend replacement only in the genuine cases: when the unit is old enough that spare parts are no longer manufactured, when several unrelated parts have failed in quick succession (a sign the electronics are deteriorating overall), or when a repair would cost almost as much as a better new system - especially if that new system adds GSM or app access you actually want. In those cases we will show you the numbers and the reasoning, not simply quote a new unit. The aim is the lowest sound cost over time.
Before You Call
DIY Pre-Call Fault Check — Intercom Guide
Run through these four checks before booking a technician. They take under 5 minutes, cost nothing, and in some cases they'll solve the problem immediately. Even if they don't, they'll help us diagnose faster on arrival.
Check 1 — Power Supply
Look at the intercom's indoor unit or control box. Is the power LED on? If not, check the 220V plug or breaker feeding the Gate intercom. A dead PSU is the single most common Gate intercom fault — often caused by a power surge or lightning strike. If the LED is off and the breaker is fine, the PSU has likely failed and needs replacing (R350–R700 for the part).
Check 2 — GSM SIM Airtime
If you have a GSM intercom, remove the SIM and check the balance on your phone. Zero airtime = no call-out to your phone. Top up the SIM, re-insert it, wait 2 minutes, and test again. Also check whether the SIM is still on the correct network — some SIMs deregister after months of low use and need a replacement.
Check 3 — Gate Motor Trigger Test
If the intercom rings but the gate won't open, go to your gate motor and use a screwdriver to briefly bridge the COM and TRG (or Trigger) terminals on the control board. If the gate opens, the motor is fine — the fault is in the trigger wire or intercom relay, not the motor itself. This narrows the repair significantly. Don't bridge terminals if you're not comfortable working around 12V electronics — just call us.
Check 4 — Cable Connections
Check the cable entry points at both the indoor unit and the gate station. Gauteng's Highveld heat and UV cause cable sheathing to crack and corrode terminals, especially outdoors. Any green corrosion on terminals is a fault waiting to happen. Check that all screw terminals are tight — a loose wire on the audio pair explains one-way sound, and a loose trigger wire explains the gate not opening.
Intercom System Repairs - Video Intercom Guide
How a Video Intercom System Works
From visitor pressing the button to you seeing them on screen and opening the gate the complete process.
Visitor Presses Call
The visitor presses the call button on the outdoor gate unit. The unit immediately activates its built-in camera and begins transmitting live video to the indoor monitor or smartphone app.
Indoor Monitor Rings
The indoor handset screen lights up showing a live feed of the visitor at the gate. For Wi-Fi / IP systems, your smartphone app receives a push notification with the live video feed even if you are away from home.
Two-Way Conversation
You pick up the handset (or answer in the app) and speak with the visitor through the two-way audio. Night vision on the outdoor unit ensures you can see the visitor clearly after dark critical for Gate intercom security Gauteng properties.
Open Gate Remotely
Press the gate release button on the handset (or tap "Open" in the app). The Gate intercom sends a relay signal to the gate motor, opening the gate. The entire process takes under 30 seconds from call to gate opening.

Technical Guide
Why Not A General Electrician
A general electrician can wire a plug and will happily quote on a gate intercom - but the faults that matter most on a gate intercom are not general-electrical faults. The signature problem, "rings but won't open", lives at the trigger relay on the gate-motor control board, and fixing it means understanding how your specific motor expects its trigger input. Get it wrong and you get one of two expensive outcomes: a swapped part that changes nothing because the real fault was in the wire, or - worse - a trigger connected at the wrong voltage that damages the motor's control board, turning a small repair into a board replacement.
The same applies to the rest of the chain. Diagnosing one-way audio means knowing the gate-station fails before the handset; tracing a surge fault means checking the gate-motor board as well as the intercom, because the shared trigger line carries surges between them. These are gate-automation instincts, built over years of doing exactly this work, not something picked up on a general call-out.
That is the whole reason to use us. The gate intercom is not a side job we figure out on your property - it is the centre of our trade. We fix it once, properly, and test it as the single system it is.

Gate Intercom Vs Standard Intercom - What's The Difference?
People use "intercom" and "gate intercom" interchangeably, but the distinction matters for repairs. A standalone intercom just lets two people talk - a door-entry phone, say, with no connection to anything that opens. A gate intercom does that and one more critical thing: it controls a gate motor, opening your driveway gate when you let a visitor in. That extra function is where most of the complexity, and most of the faults, live.
A standard intercom can be repaired by anyone comfortable with low-voltage audio or video. A gate intercom cannot - or rather, it can be, badly, by someone who does not understand the gate-motor side. The whole calling-and-talking half might be repaired perfectly while the gate still refuses to open, because the fault was never in the part the general technician understood. The gate-control half requires knowing trigger relays, motor controllers and voltage matching - gate-automation knowledge, not general-electrical knowledge.
This is the entire reason our gate-intercom repair service exists as a distinct thing. We treat the calling side and the gate-control side as one system, because to your household they are one system: you press, you talk, the gate opens. A repair that restores the talking but not the opening has fixed half a product. We fix both, and we test the opening against your actual motor before we call it done - which is exactly what separates a gate-intercom repair from a generic intercom repair.
Technical Guide
Why Gate Intercoms Often Fail Together With The Gate
One pattern worth understanding, because it explains a lot of call-outs: gate intercoms and gate motors frequently fail at the same time, or one shortly after the other. It is not coincidence - it is the shared trigger line between them.
The intercom and the motor are joined by a thin trigger wire, and that wire is a two-way path for trouble. A lightning strike or grid surge that hits the gate line can travel along it and damage the power supplies and boards at both ends in a single event - which is why "the intercom and the gate both stopped after the storm" is something we hear regularly. Equally, a fault that develops at the gate motor can present as an intercom problem (the gate won't open when you press), sending people to the wrong contractor entirely.
The practical consequences are two. First, after any surge-related failure we check the whole chain - intercom supply, trigger circuit, and motor controller - rather than replacing one part and hoping, because the surge that killed one may have weakened the other. Second, surge protection belongs on both ends, not just the intercom: protecting only one leaves the shared line as an open door for the next strike. Fitting protection at the intercom and the motor, and backing both with batteries, is how we turn a system that fails together into one that survives together.
Gate Integration
Linking Your Gate Intercom to Your Gate Motor
Every intercom needs a trigger connection to your gate motor. Getting it right is the single most common point of failure — and our specialty as gate-automation technicians.
Every gate motor has a trigger relay — a pair of terminals on the control board that, when briefly bridged, command the gate to open. Your intercom connects to these terminals and bridges them when you press the gate-release button (or press 9 on a GSM unit). Incorrect wiring or a voltage mismatch between intercom and motor is exactly why so many gaate intercom repairs Gauteng calls come down to a trigger-circuit problem. As gate-motor specialists, this is the part we

FAQs
Gate Intercom Repairs — Common Questions
What are gate intercom repairs?
Repairs to the intercom that controls your gate - the gate station, indoor handset or GSM/video unit, plus the all-important trigger link to your gate motor. We fix faults across the whole chain, from no audio to a gate that won't open.
What Is a GSM Intercom and How Does It Work?
A GSM intercom dials your cell phone when a visitor presses the call button at your gate. You answer like a normal call, speak to the visitor, then press 9 on your phone keypad to open the gate. The intercom has a SIM card inside and uses the mobile network no indoor wiring or handset is needed. You can answer from anywhere in the world
Can you repair an Gate intercom you didn't install?
Yes — most of our repair work is on systems other companies fitted. We service all the common brands and carry their wiring diagrams, so who installed it originally makes no difference. Send a photo of your unit on WhatsApp and we'll identify the make before we arrive.
Can I Answer My Gate Intercom on My Smartphone?
Yes — two ways. A GSM intercom calls your cell phone directly. An IP/Wi-Fi video intercom sends a push notification to your smartphone app with live video, and you can open the gate from the app. We install both types. For most Johannesburg homes, a GSM intercom is the simplest and most cost-effective smartphone-compatible option.
My Gate Intercom Rings but the Gate Won’t Open — What’s Wrong?
The most common intercom fault in Johannesburg. The likely causes are: a broken or corroded trigger wire between the intercom and gate motor, a failed relay inside the intercom, or a voltage mismatch between the intercom trigger output and the gate motor's trigger input. Repairs Plus diagnoses and repairs intercom-to-gate wiring faults same-day for R550–R1,200..call 061 402 6299 for emergency repair.
My Gate intercom died after a power surge or storm — can you help?
What's the difference between a GSM intercom and a Wi-Fi video intercom?
What Is the Difference Between a Video and Audio Intercom?
Do you service Urmet, Legrand or Elvox intercoms?
Why is my Commax or Centurion Gate intercom not working?
Does a GSM Intercom Work with My Centurion Gate Motor?
Yes. All GSM intercoms connect to the trigger relay terminals on your Centurion gate motor (or any other gate motor brand). When you press 9 on your phone, the intercom sends a brief short-circuit signal to these terminals, triggering the gate to open. Repairs Plus connects and tests this integration as part of every GSM intercom installation.
How Many Phone Numbers Can a GSM Intercom Call?
Standard GSM intercoms support 1–10 registered numbers. Any of these numbers can answer the call and press 9 to open the gate. Some advanced models support up to 100 numbers useful for cluster complexes. We recommend the model with the right capacity for your situation. Ask us when you call for a quote.
How much do gate intercom repairs cost?
Most repairs run R350-R2,500 depending on the fault - a trigger or relay fix is R550-R1,200, a power supply or battery R450-R900, a video camera R800-R2,500. You get a firm price on site before any work begins, with no call-out fee.
Which gate motors do you work with?
All the common ones - Centurion (D5, D5-Evo, D10 Smart), ET, Gemini, DTS and Nice. Because we are gate-automation specialists, connecting and testing the intercom-to-motor link is routine for us.
How quickly can you repair my gate intercom?
In most areas we offer a same-day call-out and carry the common parts, so the repair is usually done on the first visit. For areas further from our Sandton base we book a prompt visit.
Do you repair the keypad or tag reader on the gate too?
Yes. We repair keypads, tag and remote readers and their relay outputs alongside the intercom, since they share the same gate-release path - often sorting both in one visit.
What information helps when I book a gate intercom repair?
The brand if you know it, the exact symptom, whether it followed a storm or power cut, and your gate-motor make. A photo on WhatsApp lets us identify the unit and bring the right parts for a single-visit fix.
Someone else 'repaired' my gate intercom but it still won't open - can you sort it?
Yes, and it is common. Usually the previous attempt replaced the intercom while the real fault was in the trigger wire or relay, so nothing changed. We diagnose the actual fault, fix it at the gate-motor end, and test the open command against your motor.
Do you repair the gate motor's control board if a surge damaged it?
Yes. As gate-automation specialists we repair or replace surge-damaged controllers as well as the intercom, so a strike that took out both is sorted by one team in one visit - not bounced between two contractors.
What's the most common gate intercom fault you see?
By a clear margin, 'rings but won't open' - the trigger circuit between the intercom and the motor. It is so common precisely because it sits at the join between two systems, which is the join a gate specialist is built to fix.
My gate intercom is on a shared driveway - can you still help?
Yes. Shared-gate and small cluster setups are common work for us. We sort out who can open the gate, how the intercom calls each household, and the trigger connection to the shared motor, with clear pricing for the parties involved.
