Load Shedding and Gate Motors
Why Load Shedding Kills Gate Motors
The #1 cause of gate motor failures in Johannesburg and why your gate stopped responding after the power came back.
Load shedding is the leading cause of gate motor failures in Johannesburg. When electricity is restored after an outage, the voltage spike in those first seconds is enough to destroy the control board (PCB) inside your gate motor even if the motor itself is brand new. The Centurion D5, Johannesburg's most popular gate motor, is particularly vulnerable because its control board lacks built-in surge protection. A replacement board costs R1,800–R3,200 and we carry them in stock for same-day installation.
Gate stopped after load shedding? Call 061 402 6299
We carry replacement control boards for all major brands in our vehicles. In most cases we diagnose and fix surge damage the same day you call.
Most people assume the power outage itself is the problem. It isn't. It's the moment power comes back.
The outage — your gate switches to battery backup
When load shedding begins, your gate motor's battery backup takes over. This is normal and what the battery is designed for. The motor continues operating on clean, stable 12V or 24V DC from its internal battery. No damage occurs during the outage itself.
The surge enters your gate motor's transformer
Your gate motor is plugged in continuously. The transformer on the motor's control board steps down mains voltage to the low voltage the board needs. But the transformer passes the spike through — the surge arrives at the control board at well above the board's rated tolerance.
Power is restored — a voltage spike hits the grid
When Eskom restores power, the grid doesn't come back at a clean, stable 220V. For the first two to five seconds, voltage spikes well above the rated level as the distribution network re-energises. This is called an inrush or restoration surge and it travels through every connected device in your home.
The control board (PCB) burns out
The PCB contains sensitive electronic components — capacitors, MOSFETs, logic chips — rated for normal operating voltages. The surge exceeds their tolerance and one or more components fails, usually the main capacitor or power regulation circuit. The motor goes completely silent. It doesn't beep. It doesn't respond to the remote. The gate won't open.
How to protect your gate motor from load shedding:
Surge Protector
Installed on the gate motor's power input line. Absorbs voltage spikes the moment power is restored — the surge hits the protector, not your board. Most effective single protection against load shedding damage.
Battery Maintenance
A failing battery draws harder on the charging circuit, making boards more vulnerable during power fluctuations. Replace your backup battery every 2–3 years before it fails. A new battery also means longer backup during outages.
UPS / Solar Battery
A UPS or solar battery system keeps your gate motor on clean, stable power throughout load shedding. Eliminates both the surge problem and the battery backup problem entirely. Best long-term solution for frequent load shedding areas.
Disconnect during long outages
Unplug the transformer during outages longer than 4 hours. Reconnect 30+ seconds after power stabilises.
Gate Motor repairs Help
How to Manually Open Your Gate During Load Shedding
Sandton's most-searched gate motor query. If your gate is stuck and you need to open it manually right now — follow these steps, then call us to fix the underlying fault same day.
⚠️ Safety First
Never disengage the motor on a sloped driveway without someone holding the gate. Once disengaged, the gate rolls freely and can seriously injure people or damage vehicles. If in doubt — call us first: 061 402 6299
General Steps — All Sliding Gate Motors
Find the Release Key/Lever
Every gate motor has a manual release — a key lock, red lever or pull-cord on the motor housing. Check the side or rear face. Your installer should have left you a flat manual release key on installation
Disengage from the Rack
Turn the key or pull the lever to disengage the motor's pinion gear from the gate rack. You'll feel or hear a click when properly disengaged. The motor no longer drives the gate.
Push the Gate Manually
The gate should now roll freely on its wheels. Push it open or closed by hand. If it doesn't roll easily, the issue may be the wheels or track — not the motor. Don't force it.
Re-Engage After Power Returns
Push the gate back to fully closed or open position and re-engage the motor (reverse step 2). Press remote — the motor re-learns limits on first operation. Call us if it doesn't re-engage.
Brand-Specific Manual Release Instructions
Centurion D5 / D5-Evo / D5 Smart / D6 Smart
Insert the flat manual release key into the keyhole on the motor's front face. Turn 90° clockwise. Gate can now be pushed manually. To re-engage: turn back counter-clockwise and remove key. Motor auto-learns limits on next remote press.
Centurion D10 Smart / D10 Turbo Smart
Pull the red/orange lever on the underside of the motor housing toward you to disengage the clutch. Gate is free to push. Push lever back in firmly to re-engage. Note: D10 estate gates are very heavy — have assistance before releasing.
Nice ROBUS 600 / 1000
Insert the key into the front cover's key slot. Turn to the open padlock symbol (🔓). Slide gate by hand. To re-engage, turn to locked padlock (🔒). ROBUS auto-runs a limit reset on first remote operation after re-engagement.
Gemini Slider 12AH / Pro 24V
Pull the orange release handle outward firmly — it clicks into disengaged position. Push gate by hand. Push handle back in until it clicks to re-engage. Gemini requires a limit-learn cycle — hold remote and gate re-learns its travel.
ET Drive 500 / 1000
Insert key into motor housing (front or side). Turn to open padlock symbol. Motor disengages from rack. To re-engage: turn to locked symbol and remove. Press and hold remote button to reset limits after re-engagement.
DTS Elite 600 / Arrow
Red or orange lever on the side of the motor casing. Pull outward to disengage. Push gate manually. Push lever firmly back in to re-engage. DTS auto-detects gate position on next remote operation.
Motor Not Re-Engaging After Power Returns?
If your gate motor does not restart normally after load shedding — even after re-engaging the manual release — the control board has likely been damaged by the restoration voltage spike. Call061 402 6299and we will diagnose over the phone and dispatch same-day to your Sandton property.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions — Load Shedding & Gate Motors
Can load shedding damage my gate motor even if it has battery backup?
Yes. Battery backup keeps your gate operating during the outage — but it doesn't protect against the voltage surge when power is restored. The surge enters through the transformer regardless of whether the battery is in use. A surge protector on the power input is needed for full protection.
My gate was working fine before load shedding — why did it suddenly stop?
The restoration surge when power came back destroyed the control board. This can happen to a brand-new gate motor — the board's electronic components have a maximum voltage tolerance and the surge exceeded it. The gate motor itself is almost certainly undamaged. In most cases only the board needs replacing.
How much does it cost to repair a gate motor damaged by load shedding?
Is it worth repairing or should I replace the whole gate motor?
In the majority of load shedding damage cases, repair is the right call. The motor and mechanical components are undamaged — only the control board failed. A board replacement costs R1,800 to R3,200 versus R5,000 to R12,000 for a full motor replacement. We'll give you an honest assessment on-site and only recommend replacement if the motor itself is beyond economical repair.
How do I manually open my gate if the motor is dead after load shedding?
Most gate motors have a manual release key or lever near the motor unit — usually a small T-bar key or a red lever. Turning or pulling this disengages the motor from the rack, allowing you to push the gate open by hand. Re-engage it the same way once power is restored. If you can't find the release, call us on 061 402 6299 — we'll walk you through it over the phone.
Do you offer same-day load shedding gate motor repairs in Johannesburg?

Which gate motor is most resistant to load shedding damage?
The Centurion D10 Smart has the most robust control board of the commonly installed motors in Johannesburg. The Centurion D5-Evo is better protected than the older D5. For any motor, adding a surge protector to the power input line significantly reduces vulnerability regardless of brand. We install these during repair callouts — ask us when you call.
