Fencing Types We Install

Security Fencing Types — Supply and Installation

We supply and install every type of steel security fencing used for residential, commercial and industrial properties across Johannesburg.

Steel Palisade and Security Fencing

Flat-Bar Palisade

The most common residential palisade profile in Johannesburg. Flat steel pales (uprights) welded or bolted to horizontal rails and mounted on concrete-filled posts. Available in pointed, flat-top or spear-top profiles. Galvanised or powder-coated. Standard height 1.5m–2.4m.
Steel Palisade and Security Fencing

Weld-Mesh Panel Fencing

Welded steel wire mesh panels in rigid or semi-rigid form, mounted on posts. Provides good visibility through the fence while maintaining a strong physical barrier. Popular for security estates, schools, sports fields and commercial perimeters. Anti-climb versions available with tightly-spaced mesh.

Steel Palisade and Security Fencing

Twin-Bar / 358 Anti-Climb Mesh

358 mesh (also called "prison mesh") has 76.2×12.7mm openings  too small to insert fingers or feet, making it virtually impossible to climb. The tightest anti-climb option available. Used on high-security perimeters where climbing is a primary threat. Standard height 2.4m–3.0m.

Steel palisade fencing Finish Options

Galvanised vs Powder-Coated Palisade — What's the Difference?

The most common question we get from Johannesburg homeowners and developers. Here is the definitive comparison.

Hot-Dip Galvanised

  • 20–40 year corrosion protection no maintenance required
  • Lower cost than powder-coated — better value long-term
  • Zinc coating bonds metallurgically — cannot peel or chip
  • Can be painted over at any stage if colour is later desired
  • Scratches self-heal through cathodic protection of zinc
  • Silver-grey appearance — not suitable where specific colour is required
  • Less aesthetically refined than powder-coated finish

Powder-Coated

  • Available in any RAL colour black, charcoal, green, white
  • More aesthetically finished preferred in upmarket estates
  • Applied over galvanised base duplex system for maximum protection
  • Smooth, even surface finish high-quality appearance
  • Slightly higher cost than galvanised-only finish
  • Coating can chip at impact points — requires touching up
  • Touch-up paint available from us for minor scratches

Paskwa Gate Repairs recommendation:

For most Johannesburg residential and commercial properties, black powder-coated palisade is the preferred choice it looks better, matches most gate motors and CCTV cameras, and the duplex galvanised + powder coating gives excellent longevity. For industrial, agricultural or budget-conscious installations, hot-dip galvanised is the better value option. Both are SANS 1294 compliant.

Choosing the Right Height

Palisade Fencing Height Guide — Johannesburg

The right height depends on your security requirements, property type and whether you plan to add electric fencing above.

Remote viewing allows you to watch your CCTV cameras live from anywhere in the world using your smartphone, tablet or PC. It also lets you review recorded footage, receive motion alerts, and control PTZ cameras all from your phone. Paskwa Gate Repairs sets up remote viewing as part of every installation. Here is how it works:

1.5m

Minimum residential height. Suitable as a boundary demarcation or deterrent on lower-risk properties. Not recommended as a primary security barrier in Johannesburg without additional measures such as electric fencing above.

Use for: garden demarcation · Low-risk areas

1.8m

The standard residential security height in Johannesburg. Provides a meaningful physical barrier. Often combined with electric fencing above to reach an effective 2.3–2.5m total height. The most commonly installed height for Johannesburg homes.

Use for: Standard residential · Most Johannesburg homes

2.1m

Upgraded residential security. A 2.1m palisade without electric fencing provides a comparable deterrent to a 1.8m fence with electric fencing on top. Popular in higher-risk areas and for homeowners who prefer the visual deterrent of a taller physical barrier.

Use for: Higher-risk areas · No electric fence preference

2.4m

Commercial and high-security residential standard. The minimum height required by most South African commercial insurance policies without additional security measures. Also the standard height for estate perimeter fencing and industrial applications.

Use for: Commercial · Estates · Industrial · Insurance requirements

Heights above 2.4m (2.7m, 3.0m) are available for high-security and industrial applications. Paskwa Gate Repairs advises on the appropriate height for your specific property and security requirements during the free site assessment.. Call 061 402 6299 to book.

Why Combine Palisade & Electric Fencing?

Palisade fencing alone is a physical barrier  it slows down and deters intruders but does not actively stop a determined criminal. Electric fencing adds an active deterrent (a painful shock) and an alarm trigger that alerts your security company. Together, they form the most cost-effective residential security perimeter available in Johannesburg  more effective than either system alone..  Call 061 402 6299

hysical Barrier (Palisade)

1.8m or 2.1m palisade creates the primary physical barrier — delays intrusion, creates a clear property boundary, and provides a mounting surface for the electric fence above.

Active Deterrent (Electric Fence)

5–8 live wires above the palisade line deliver a painful but safe shock — the primary deterrent. Any contact also triggers the alarm zone, alerting your armed response company.

COC Certificate Included

When we install both systems in the same project, the electric fence COC is included at no extra charge. One contractor, one project, one completion simpler and more cost-effective.

Typical Combined Cost

1.8m palisade + electric fence: R1,100–R1,450/m fully installed including energiser and COC. Significantly cheaper than two separate projects.

How We Install

Our Palisade Fencing Installation Process

From your first call to the completed fence  here is exactly what to expect.

Free Site Assessment

A technician visits your property to measure the perimeter, assess ground conditions (soil, rock, concrete), identify gate positions, discuss height and profile options, and assess whether combining with electric fencing is advisable. We also confirm the fence line with the client and discuss any boundary issues. Assessment is free and no-obligation. We typically visit within 48–72 hours of your call

Detailed Written Quote

You receive a full itemised quotation covering materials (posts, pales, rails, concrete, gate hardware), installation labour, and the finish. All line items are explained. We include alternative options where relevant — for example, a galvanised vs powder-coated price comparison. No hidden costs. Quote turnaround is typically same day or next business day after the site visit.

Installation

Posts are positioned according to SANS 1294 spacing requirements and set in concrete. The concrete is allowed to cure for 24 hours before rails and pales are fitted. Pales are welded or bolted to rails depending on the specification. Gates are hung and fitted with hardware. The entire perimeter is inspected and cleaned before handover. Typical residential installation takes 3–7 days depending on perimeter length.

Inspection and Handover

We walk the completed fence with the client, demonstrate all gate hardware and locking systems, and confirm that the installation meets SANS 1294 requirements. Any remedial work identified during the walkthrough is completed before final handover. For combined palisade + electric fence projects, the electric fence COC is issued on the same day as completion

SANS 1294 Compliance

What Does SANS 1294 Require for Palisade Fencing?

South Africa's national standard for steel palisade fencing and why it matters for your insurance and estate compliance.

SANS 1294 is the South African National Standard that specifies the minimum requirements for steel palisade fencing used in security applications. All palisade fencing installed by Repairs Plus complies fully with SANS 1294. Here are the key requirements the standard specifies:

Steel Grade & Dimensions

Pales must be minimum 65mm wide × 6mm thick (residential) or 65mm × 8mm (heavy duty). Rails are minimum 40×40mm or 50×50mm angle iron. Posts are minimum 76mm × 76mm × 3mm RHS or equivalent. All steel must be SANS-compliant structural grade.

Pale Spacing

Maximum gap between pales of 100mm prevents a person from fitting a foot between pales to climb. The 100mm maximum is specified to prevent use as a climbing aid. Narrower spacing (75mm) is used in high-security applications.

Post Spacing and Foundations

Maximum post spacing of 3.0m for standard palisade and 2.4m for heavy-duty applications. Posts must be set in concrete with a minimum embedment depth of 600mm for 1.8m fencing and 750mm for 2.4m fencing. Concrete must reach minimum 20MPa compressive strength.

Corrosion Protection

All steel must have a minimum 45µm hot-dip galvanised coating to SANS 121 (ISO 1461) standard, or an equivalent duplex coating system. This is why buying cheaper non-SANS-compliant palisade fencing is false economy  it rusts within 3–5 years without adequate coating.

Why SANS 1294 compliance matters for you

Many insurers and sectional title schemes specify SANS 1294 compliant fencing as a condition of coverage or residence. Non-compliant fencing installed by unregistered contractors may not satisfy insurance requirements and could void your claim in the event of a break-in. All Repairs Plus palisade installations are SANS 1294 compliant we can provide written confirmation if required.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions Steel Palisade and Security Fencing Johannesburg

HOW MUCH DOES PALISADE FENCING COST PER METRE IN JOHANNESBURG?

Palisade fencing costs R650–R850 per metre for galvanised 1.5m, R750–R980/m for galvanised 1.8m, and R900–R1,150/m for powder-coated black 1.8m — all fully installed including posts, concrete and labour. Heavy-duty 2.4m palisade ranges from R1,200–R1,800/m. Prices vary based on ground conditions, number of corners and site access. Free site assessments and quotations available — call 061 402 6299

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GALVANISED AND POWDER-COATED PALISADE?

Galvanised palisade has a zinc coating for 20–40 year corrosion protection with a silver-grey metallic finish. Powder-coated palisade has a coloured paint coating (black is most common) applied over galvanising — better appearance, slightly higher cost, and the coating can chip at impact points. For most Johannesburg residential properties, we recommend black powder-coated for aesthetics. For industrial and budget-conscious installations, galvanised is the better value.

WHAT HEIGHT PALISADE DO I NEED FOR MY JOHANNESBURG HOME?

Most residential properties use 1.8m palisade fencing for effective perimeter security, while commercial and industrial sites often require 2.1m or 2.4m fencing for higher security protection. The correct height depends on the property type, security risks, and local compliance requirements.

IS YOUR PALISADE FENCING SANS 1294 COMPLIANT?

Yes. All palisade fencing supplied and installed by Repairs Plus complies with SANS 1294, the South African National Standard for steel palisade fencing. This covers steel grade, pale dimensions, post spacing, foundation depth and corrosion protection requirements. SANS compliance is important for insurance purposes and sectional title or estate management requirements. We can provide written confirmation of compliance if required.

DO YOU SUPPLY AND INSTALL PALISADE GATES?

Yes. We supply and install matching palisade pedestrian gates (from R3,500), vehicle gates (from R6,500) and fully automated sliding palisade gates with gate motor, remotes, safety sensors and intercom integration (from R10,000). Gates are manufactured to match your fence profile and finish exactly.
