Intercom Not Working? Here's Why - and How to Fix It

It is a frustrating moment: a visitor presses the button and nothing happens, your handset stays silent, or the gate simply will not open. The reassuring truth is that "intercom not working" almost never means the whole system has died. In the overwhelming majority of cases a single component has failed - a surge-damaged power supply, a flat backup battery, a corroded wire, a worn handset, or a relay that has stopped switching. Each of those is an affordable, same-visit repair.

The trick is working out which part has failed before money is spent replacing the wrong thing. That is exactly what this guide is for. Below you will find a set of safe checks to run yourself, then a plain-English breakdown of every common fault - what you see, what is actually causing it, and how it gets fixed - so you can approach the repair knowing what to expect and what it should cost.

One regional note up front: because Gauteng sits high on the Highveld, summer lightning storms and power surges are a year-round threat to electronics. A large share of "my intercom suddenly died" calls trace straight back to a surge that took out the power supply or cooked a backup battery. Where that is the cause, fitting surge protection at the same time as the repair is what stops it happening again.

Eighteen years of gate-automation experience is what separates our work from a general electrician's: most intercom problems are really integration problems - the intercom talking to your gate motor - and that join is precisely what we understand best. If your unit rings but the gate won't open, that is our home ground.

Start Here - 5 Safe Checks Before You Call

These are all things you can safely do yourself in a few minutes. They resolve a surprising number of "not working" cases outright, and even when they do not, they tell the technician exactly where to look - which often means the right part arrives on the first visit.

Check the power

Make sure the intercom's plug or transformer is switched on and the wall socket actually works. Many intercoms run off a small plug-in supply that can be knocked off or tripped without anyone noticing.

Check your DB board

A tripped breaker or blown fuse on the circuit feeding the gate can kill the intercom and the gate motor together. Reset a tripped breaker once - if it trips again, stop and call us, because that points to a fault drawing too much current.

GSM units: check the SIM

Confirm the SIM has airtime or an active data bundle and that the network has signal at the gate. A lapsed or de-registered SIM is one of the most common reasons a GSM unit "stops calling" with nothing actually broken.

Look for obvious damage

Water in the gate station, ants or geckos inside the unit, chewed cabling, or scorch marks after a storm all point straight to where the fault is. A quick look saves a lot of guesswork.

Test the gate from its remote

If the gate opens normally from its own remote, the gate motor is healthy and the problem sits between the intercom and the motor - not in the motor itself. This single check rules out half the possibilities in one move.

The Most Common Reasons An Intercom Stops Working

Match your symptom to a cause - then follow it through to the detailed guide.

Almost every "not working" call we attend falls into one of the patterns below. Find the one that matches your symptom - each links through to a dedicated guide where the fault is covered in full depth.

Completely Dead - No Lights

The unit is getting no power, or the power supply itself has failed. Usual causes: a surge-damaged power supply, a flat or failed backup battery, or a tripped circuit. The fix is to test the supply voltage, replace the PSU or battery, and fit surge protection. Covered in full on our Intercom Power Supply Repair guide.

No Audio, Or One-Way Sound

Power is fine but you cannot hear the visitor, they cannot hear you, or both. Usual causes: a failed microphone or speaker in the gate station, corroded connectors, or a broken audio pair. The fix is to isolate the gate station, handset or cable and replace the failed part. See our No Audio on Intercom guide.

Rings, But The Gate Won't Open

The intercom calls you and audio works, but pressing the gate button - or 9 on a GSM unit - does nothing. This is the trigger circuit, not the intercom: a corroded or broken wire to the gate-motor relay, a failed relay, or a voltage mismatch. See Intercom Gate Not Opening.

Buzzing, Humming Or Crackling

The system powers up but the sound is distorted, noisy or carries a constant hum. Usual causes: a failing power supply, corroded connectors, water ingress, or interference on a long cable run. See Intercom Buzzing Sound.

GSM Unit Won't Call Your Phone

A visitor presses call and your phone never rings. Usual causes: no airtime or data, weak signal at the gate, a de-registered SIM, or a unit fault. The fix is to check signal and SIM status, switch to the strongest network at the gate, re-programme numbers and re-test.

Video Screen Is Black Or Snowy

The handset powers up but shows no picture or a poor one. Usual causes: a failed camera module, a damaged or water-ingressed video cable, or a power fault starving the camera. We test the feed at the source, replace the camera or cable, and re-commission night vision.

What "Not Working" Looks Like On Each System Type

The same words - "not working" - mean different things on different systems, and knowing your type narrows the fault to a handful of parts before anyone opens a cover.

Intercom System Repairs

GSM Dialler Intercom

A SIM-based unit that dials your cellphone. "Not working" usually means no call at all (airtime, signal or SIM), or it calls but pressing 9 will not open the gate - a tone-detection or trigger fault.

Best for: Power and SIM are always the first things to check

Intercom Repairs

Video Intercom

A camera at the gate feeding an indoor screen or a phone app. "Not working" tends to be a black or snowy screen (camera or cable), no app notifications (Wi-Fi or app configuration), or a completely dead screen (power).

Best for: Test the camera feed at the source before suspecting the screen.

Multi-Unit / Complex Intercom

Multi-Unit / Complex

A shared entrance panel for many units. "Not working" is either the whole panel down (power or main board) or a single unit affected - that unit's riser pair or handset.

Best for: Whole-panel and single-unit faults have very different fixes. Quoted per unit.

Intercom System Installation and Repairs

Audio Intercom

A voice-only handset and gate station. "Not working" is usually no sound, faint sound or one-way audio - and the fault is almost always the gate station, the handset, or the wire between them.

Best for: Isolate gate-station vs handset vs cable first.

Brands We Repair

Common Faults By Brand

The brand on your gate is a strong hint about the likely failure, even though the underlying causes - power, wiring, weather and surges - are shared across all of them. We carry parts and wiring diagrams for every brand below.

Hikvision

IP & two-wire video with app access. "Not working" is often network or app configuration as much as hardware.

Commax

Very common audio & video handsets. The gate-station camera or speaker, and ageing handsets, are the usual culprits

BPT

Italian audio/video door entry on many estates. Panel modules and corroded risers fail first on older installs.

Came

Access control and multi-tenant systems. Module and entrance-hardware faults on body-corporate sites.

Centurion

G-Speak Ultra & POLOphone. Most failures are power-supply, SIM or trigger-wiring related rather than the unit itself.

Legrand / Elvox

European two-wire video systems. Handset replacement, panel work and riser repairs.

GSM Diallers

Any SIM-based unit that rings your phone — programming, repairs, SIM swaps and replacement.

Aiphone

Commercial-grade systems. Robust, but exposed gate stations and cabling still fail over time.

Should You DIY Or Call A Technician?

The five checks at the top of this page are safe for anyone. Beyond that, a few jobs are reasonable to attempt yourself, and several are not.

Fine to do yourself: topping up the SIM, resetting a tripped breaker once, cleaning a visibly dirty or stuck button, re-seating a handset on its cradle, and replacing the simple indoor batteries some units use.

Best left to a technician: anything that involves opening the gate-motor controller, testing or replacing the power supply, working on trigger wiring or relays, fault-finding a complex riser, or any work while the system is live. Intercoms are low-voltage, but they connect to mains-fed supplies and to your gate-motor electronics - and a wrong connection there can destroy an expensive control board. The moment a check would involve the motor's wiring, that is our cue, not yours.

There is also a simple economic logic to it: a call-out that finds and fixes the real fault in one visit almost always costs less than two or three rounds of replacing parts that were not the problem.

Is It The Intercom, Or The Gate Motor?

This is the single most useful thing to establish, because it decides who you call and what gets fixed. Run through it in under a minute:

1. If the intercom lights up, rings, and carries clear audio, the intercom is fine - the fault is in the trigger circuit or the gate motor. 2. If your gate opens normally from its own remote, the motor is healthy and the problem sits in the wire between the intercom and the motor's trigger terminals. 3. If the gate will not open from the remote either, the issue is the motor or its power supply - not the intercom at all.

Because we are gate-automation specialists, we handle both ends. You are never bounced between an "intercom person" who cannot get the gate to open and a "gate person" who will not touch the intercom - the fault that lives at the join between the two is precisely the one we fix most often.

Why Intercoms Fail On The Highveld

It is worth understanding why intercoms in Gauteng fail more often than the manufacturer's lifespan suggests - because the reasons also tell you how to prevent it. Three forces do most of the damage.

Lightning and power surges. The Highveld has one of the highest lightning-strike densities in the country. A nearby strike or a grid-switching surge sends a voltage spike down the mains and the gate line, and the intercom's power supply - the most exposed electronic part - takes the hit. This is the number-one cause of a unit that "worked yesterday and is dead today."

Power cuts and tired batteries. Repeated outages cycle the backup battery hard, and a battery that has been run flat dozens of times eventually fails to hold charge. A dying battery does not just stop providing backup - it can drag down an otherwise-healthy power supply, causing intermittent faults that are easy to misdiagnose.

Sun, dust and rain. The outdoor gate station bakes in summer sun, fills with dust, and takes direct rain. Over years this corrodes connectors, perishes seals and lets water into the unit - which is why the gate station almost always fails before the protected indoor handset.

The practical takeaway: the same surge protection and battery maintenance that fix the fault today are what stop you paying for the same repair next storm season.

How We Fix It

Our approach is the same whether it is a single dead handset or a complex panel with units down: diagnose precisely, repair properly, and protect against a repeat.

Diagnose

We test the power supply, battery, wiring, handset or camera and the trigger circuit to find the exact failed component - not a guess. You get a firm price before any work begins, with no separate diagnostic fee.

Repair

We carry the common parts on the vehicle - power supplies, batteries, handsets, relays and cable - so most repairs are completed on the first visit. For installs we mount the unit, run cabling and connect the gate relay.

Test & Protect

We test call and gate-release end to end, fit surge protection on the intercom and the gate motor, and demonstrate the working system before we leave - then back it with a workmanship guarantee.

Two Faults People Often Miss

Most "not working" faults are obvious once you know the patterns above. Two, though, are routinely misread - and chasing the wrong cause on either wastes time and money.

The intermittent fault - works sometimes, dies sometimes. An intercom that fails and then mysteriously comes back is the classic signature of a backup battery on its way out, a connector that expands and contracts with temperature, or a power supply that can no longer hold voltage under load. People often live with it for months, pressing the unit twice until it catches. The cause is almost always electrical and degrading - it will not fix itself, and it usually fails completely at the worst moment. We test the supply and battery under load to catch it before that happens.

It works for one person but not another. On a GSM intercom, if the gate calls one family member's phone but not another's, nothing is broken - the second number simply was not programmed in, has been knocked off the unit's list, or the unit has hit its stored-number limit. On a complex panel, one unit ringing and another not points to that specific unit's riser pair, not a panel-wide fault. Both are quick to put right once correctly identified, which is the whole point: the symptom tells you exactly how narrow the fault really is.

FAQs

Intercom Not Working? — Common Questions

Why has my intercom suddenly stopped working?

The most common reasons are a surge-damaged power supply, a flat backup battery, a corroded or broken wire, or a failed handset or camera. In our region a lightning strike or power surge is the single biggest cause of a system that "worked yesterday and is dead today."

How much does it cost to fix an intercom that's not working?

Most repairs run R350–R2,500 depending on the fault. A power supply or battery is R450–R900, a trigger or relay fix R550–R1,200, a video camera R800–R2,500. You get a firm price on site before any work starts.

Can I fix my intercom myself?

You can safely check the power, reset a tripped breaker once, top up a GSM SIM and look for obvious damage. Anything involving the power supply, trigger wiring, relays or the gate-motor board is best left to a technician — a wrong connection can damage expensive electronics.

My intercom rings but the gate won't open — is the intercom broken?

Usually not. That symptom almost always points to the trigger circuit between the intercom and the gate motor — a broken wire, a failed relay or a voltage mismatch — rather than the intercom itself.

My Intercom Rings but the Gate Won’t Open — What’s Wrong?

The most common intercom fault in Johannesburg. The likely causes are: a broken or corroded trigger wire between the intercom and gate motor, a failed relay inside the intercom, or a voltage mismatch between the intercom trigger output and the gate motor's trigger input. Repairs Plus diagnoses and repairs intercom-to-gate wiring faults same-day for R550–R1,200..call 061 402 6299 for emergency repair.

My GSM intercom won't call my phone. What's wrong?

Check airtime or data on the SIM and the signal at the gate first. A lapsed or de-registered SIM and weak signal are the usual causes; sometimes the unit needs re-programming or a stronger network.

What's the difference between a GSM intercom and a Wi-Fi video intercom?
A GSM intercom calls your cellphone over the mobile network — simple, reliable, works anywhere you have signal, and doesn't need your home Wi-Fi. A Wi-Fi video intercom connects to your router and sends a live-video push notification to an app; you see the visitor and tap to open. GSM is more reliable during a power cut (no router needed) while Wi-Fi gives you a live video feed. We install and repair both in Sandton.
What Is the Difference Between a Video and Audio Intercom?
An audio intercom allows voice communication only. A video intercom adds a camera at the gate, letting you see the visitor on a screen before opening. In Johannesburg, we strongly recommend video over audio  being able to verify who is at the gate visually before opening is a critical security step. Video intercoms start from R3,500 fully installed.
Do you service Urmet, Legrand or Elvox intercoms?
Yes. We repair Urmet, Legrand and Elvox two-wire video intercom systems, which are common in older Sandton estates and complexes built in the 1990s and 2000s. We replace handsets, door stations, power supplies and re-cable risers on these systems. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll confirm parts availability before we arrive.
Why is my Commax or Centurion intercom not working?
The usual culprits are power and wiring: a surge-damaged supply, a flat backup battery, corroded connectors, or a failed handset or camera on the gate station. Commax and Centurion units are reliable but exposed to weather, lightning and power surges. We diagnose the exact cause rather than guessing at parts.
Does a GSM Intercom Work with My Centurion Gate Motor?

Yes. All GSM intercoms connect to the trigger relay terminals on your Centurion gate motor (or any other gate motor brand). When you press 9 on your phone, the intercom sends a brief short-circuit signal to these terminals, triggering the gate to open. Repairs Plus connects and tests this integration as part of every GSM intercom installation.

How Many Phone Numbers Can a GSM Intercom Call?

Standard GSM intercoms support 1–10 registered numbers. Any of these numbers can answer the call and press 9 to open the gate. Some advanced models support up to 100 numbers useful for cluster complexes. We recommend the model with the right capacity for your situation. Ask us when you call for a quote.

How quickly can you repair it?

In most areas we offer a same-day call-out, and our vans carry the parts behind most faults, so the repair is usually finished on the first visit. For areas further from our Sandton base we book a prompt visit.

Do you repair intercoms you didn't install?

Yes — most of our repair work is on systems other companies fitted. We service all the common brands and carry their wiring diagrams. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll identify the make before we arrive.

Is it worth repairing or should I replace the whole intercom?

Usually repair — a single failed part is far cheaper than a new system, and most units last years longer. We only recommend replacing when the unit is obsolete, parts are unavailable, or the repair would cost more than a new system.
