Centurion Gate Motor Repairs Johannesburg - Why Centurion is Different

Johannesburg's Most Repaired Gate Motor Brand

Centurion is the dominant gate motor brand in Johannesburg and the one we repair most. Here is everything you need to know about your specific model.

Centurion Systems, a South African company, produces the most widely installed automatic gate motors in Johannesburg and Gauteng. The Centurion  D5 and Centurion D5-Evo alone account for the majority of residential sliding gate installations across Sandton, Midrand, Randburg, Fourways and surrounding areas. This dominance means we have repaired and installed thousands of Centurion motors across Johannesburg we know every fault, every quirk, and every shortcut that makes the difference between a 1-hour same-day fix and a 3-day wait for parts.

Crucially, we carry Centurion replacement parts  including control boards, capacitors, limit switches, motor brushes and remotes  in our service vehicles at all times. This means same-day repair for the vast majority of Centurion faults across Johannesburg, without waiting for parts to be ordered or delivered.

Centurion Models — Repairs, Faults & Specifications

Select your Centurion model below for specific fault information, repair costs and maintenance guidance.

Centurion D5 and D5-Evo Gate Motor

Common Faults

Control Board Failure (Surge Damage)

The #1 fault in Johannesburg. The voltage surge when power is restored after load shedding destroys the PCB. Symptom: gate completely unresponsive, no LED activity, no response to remote or manual controls. The motor winding is almost always undamaged only the board fails.

Battery Backup Failure

The 7Ah sealed lead-acid battery inside the Centurion D5 has a rated life of 2–3 years under normal conditions. Johannesburg's load shedding dramatically shortens this the battery is over-discharged through repeated cycles and loses its ability to hold charge. Symptom: gate stops working during outages, or gate stops unexpectedly during normal operation.

Limit Switch Fault

The limit switches tell the motor when to stop at the open and closed positions. If misaligned or worn, the gate overshoots, stops partway, or reverses before reaching the end position. Common after any work on the gate or after the gate has been manually operated repeatedly during outages.

Safety Sensor / Photo Eye Fault

The infrared safety beam across the gate opening is misaligned, dirty, or damaged. Symptom: gate reverses unexpectedly before fully opening or closing, or gate refuses to close. One of the most common calls we receive and one of the cheapest fixes.

Remote / Receiver Fault

Remote stops working or works only intermittently. First step: replace the remote battery (CR2032 or similar). If the problem persists, the receiver inside the motor has failed  often from surge damage or radio frequency interference from nearby devices.

Capacitor Failure

The starting capacitor provides the initial torque burst to get the motor moving. When it fails, the motor makes a clicking or humming sound but the gate doesn't move. Common on Centurion D5 units over 5 years old or that have been overloaded by a heavy gate.

Centurion D10 Smart Gate Motor

Common Faults

Motor Winding Failure

Unlike the Centurion D5, the Centurion D10 is more likely to suffer motor winding failure than board failure  because the motor runs harder under the weight of heavy gates. Symptoms: motor runs hot, produces burning smell, or draws high current without moving the gate properly. The D10 gearbox is robust but the winding wears on gates over 700kg used more than 50 times per day.

Control Board Failure

TheCenturion  D10 Smart control board is more sophisticated than the Centurion  D5 board and includes built-in load-shedding protection  but it can still be damaged by severe voltage surges. The Centurion D10 board also manages the smart features (obstruction learning, soft start/stop, GSM) so a board failure disables all intelligent functions.

Battery Backup Failure

The Centurion D10 uses two 7Ah 12V batteries in series (24V system). Both batteries should be replaced at the same time replacing only one causes the new battery to be dragged down by the old one. Battery life is 2–4 years under Johannesburg load-shedding conditions.

Gearbox Wear

The Centurion D10 gearbox is a heavy-duty unit designed for unlimited daily cycles, but it will wear on very high-use commercial and estate gates. Symptoms: grinding sound from the motor housing, play or slack in the drive, or gate movement becoming uneven. Regular lubrication of the gearbox extends its life significantly.

Centurion D3 Gate Motor

Common Faults

Flat Battery Backup

The Centurion D3's 7Ah battery is the smallest in the Centurion range and depletes fastest under load-shedding conditions. The most common Centurion D3 fault by far. If the gate stops working during power outages but works fine when the power is on — the battery needs replacing. Test by switching off the mains and trying the remote.

Control Board Failure

The Centurion D3 board is less surge-resistant than the Centurion D5. If the gate completely stops responding after load shedding with no LED activity, the board has likely been fried by a power surge. Board replacement restores full function.

Overloaded Motor

The Centurion D3 is rated for gates up to 300kg. Many installations in Johannesburg use the Centurion D3 on heavier gates to save cost. An overloaded Centurion D3 runs hot, trips its thermal overload protection, and has a dramatically reduced motor lifespan. If your Centurion D3 stops working after a few cycles of operation, overloading is likely. Upgrade to Centurion D5 recommended.

Centurion R5 and Vantage Gate Motor

Common Faults

Ram Seal Failure (Hydraulic Leak)

The linear ram uses hydraulic fluid under pressure to extend and retract. The seals that contain this fluid degrade over time, particularly in Johannesburg's temperature extremes. Symptoms: oil stain on the ram body, gate moving slowly or not fully extending, gate drifting back after being set to open. Ram seal replacement restores full function.

Limit Switch Misalignment

The limit switches on the Centurion R5 define the full-open and fully-closed positions of the gate leaf. If the gate leaf has been manually pushed past its limit (during an outage or power failure) or if the arm bracket shifts, the limit switches go out of alignment. Symptom: gate overshoots, reverses, or doesn't open/close fully.

Control Board Failure

The Centurion R5 control board manages the two-motor coordination on double-leaf gates, the anti-crushing force detection, and the pedestrian mode logic. Load-shedding surge damage is the most common cause of board failure. For double-leaf gates, board failure on one motor causes both gates to stop.

Gate Leaf Arm Joint Wear

The articulated arm connecting the ram to the gate leaf has pivot joints that wear over time. A worn joint causes the gate to wobble or knock at the end of its travel. Early replacement of worn joints prevents damage to the ram itself.

Gate Motor Question

Centurion D5 vs D5-Evo vs D5 Smart — What's the Difference?

The most common gate motor question we receive from Johannesburg homeowners. These three models look nearly identical from the outside but differ significantly in board quality, surge protection and features. If you don't know which model you have, check the label inside the motor housing lid.

Paskwa Tip for Sandton D5 Owners

If you have the original Centurion D5 (no LCD screen, no DOSS), we strongly recommend upgrading to a D5-Evo spec board on the same callout when your board is replaced after load shedding damage. The upgrade cost difference is R400–R600 and gives you significantly better surge protection going forward. Many Sandton D5 owners have had boards replaced 2–3 times without this upgrade.

For new installations in Johannesburg, always specify the D5-Evo. The load-shedding protection and improved board tolerance are worth the small price premium. For existing D5 owners: if your board fails, consider replacing it with a D5-Evo board instead the housing is compatible and you gain Evo protection for R2,200–R3,500 rather than buying a whole new motor

Test battery backup monthly

Switch off the mains supply at your DB board and try the remote. The gate should open and close normally on battery alone. If it doesn't respond your battery needs replacing. Under Johannesburg's load-shedding conditions, D5 batteries often fail within 18 months rather than the rated 2–3 years. Proactive replacement (R650–R950) prevents being stranded during an outage.
Monthly test · Replace every 18–24 months under load shedding conditions

Install a surge protector

The single most effective thing you can do to protect your Centurion D5 from load-shedding damage. A surge protector installed on the motor's power input absorbs the voltage spike when electricity is restored after an outage the exact spike that destroys the control board. Fitted cost: R450–R900. This is significantly cheaper than a control board replacement (R1,800–R3,200) and completely preventable.
One-time installation · Recommended for every Johannesburg Centurion owner

Lubricate the rack and pinion

Apply a heavy-duty gear grease (not WD-40) to the rack teeth and the drive pinion gear on the motor once every 6 months. The rack-and-pinion is the primary wear point on a Centurion sliding gate installation. Insufficient lubrication causes the motor to work harder, increases current draw, and accelerates wear on the motor brushes and gearbox. A tube of gear grease costs under R100.
Every 6 months · Use heavy-duty gear grease — NOT WD-40

Check gate balance and alignment

A misaligned or unbalanced gate forces the Centurion motor to work significantly harder than designed. Check that the gate runs smoothly along the track, the guide roller is properly adjusted, and the gate doesn't lean to one side. Disconnect the motor and push the gate manually  it should move easily with one hand. Any resistance indicates a mechanical issue that the motor is compensating for, shortening its life.
Every 6 months · Critical for motor longevity

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions Centurion Gate Motor Repairs Johannesburg

How Much Does Centurion D5 Repair Cost in Johannesburg?

Centurion D5 repairs range from R350 for a remote reprogram to R6,000 for a full motor supply and installation. The most common repair control board replacement after load-shedding surge damage costs R1,800–R2,800. Battery backup replacement is R650–R950. We provide a free diagnosis and quote before starting any work.  call 061 402 6299 or book online.

Why Did My Centurion D5 Stop After Load Shedding?

The Centurion D5 control board lacks built-in surge protection. When electricity is restored after load shedding, the voltage spike destroys the board. The motor winding is almost always undamaged — only the PCB fails. We carry replacement D5 boards in stock for same-day repair at R1,800–R2,800.

What Is the Difference Between the Centurion D5 and Centurion D5-EVO?

The Centurion D5-Evo adds enhanced load-shedding protection it continues to guard and monitor the entrance even when there is no mains power. The Centurion D5-Evo board is also more surge-tolerant than the original D5 board. For Johannesburg's load-shedding conditions, we always recommend the Centurion D5-Evo for new installations. Existing Centurion D5 owners can upgrade their board to Centurion D5-Evo specification for R2,200–R3,500. Call 061 402 6299 any time.

How Long Does a Centurion Gate Motor Last?

A Centurion D5 typically lasts 8–15 years under normal residential use. Johannesburg's load shedding significantly reduces this  repeated power cycles and surge damage accelerate board and battery deterioration. A surge protector (R450–R900 fitted) and annual battery replacement dramatically extend the motor's lifespan.

How Do I Manually Open My Centurion Gate When the Motor Fails?

Locate the manual release key slot on the Centurion motor housing  typically on the side or end of the unit. Insert the manual release key (should be on your key ring if fitted at installation) and turn to disengage the drive pinion from the rack. The gate can then be pushed open by hand. Re-engage by turning the key back or sliding the gate until the pinion re-engages automatically. Can't find the key? Call 061 402 6299 and we will guide you over the phone.

Do you install new gate motors?

Yes. We supply and install all major brands. We will assess your gate size, weight, and usage frequency to recommend the right motor. Installation includes programming of remotes and safety testing.

Should I Repair My Centurion D5 or Replace It?

Repair if: the motor is under 8 years old and the fault is the control board, battery, capacitor or sensor — these are all straightforward component replacements that restore the motor to full function. Replace if: the motor winding itself has burnt out, the motor is over 12 years old, or you have had 3+ board replacements in 2 years. Consider upgrading to the D5-Evo rather than replacing like-for-like, for the improved load-shedding protection.

Do you repair Centurion gate motors in Johannesburg?

Yes — Centurion is the brand we repair most frequently in Johannesburg. We service the full range: D2, D3, D5, D5-Evo, D10 Smart, R5 and Vantage. We stock genuine replacement parts including control boards, capacitors, motor brushes and limit switches for same-day repairs.
