Overview
What Is the Centurion D5-Evo?
The Centurion D5-Evo is the most widely installed gate motor in South Africa today. Launched in 2013 as the successor to the original D5, the Evo variant introduced three major upgrades that transformed how South African homeowners experience gate automation: a full LCD display for easy programming, the DOSS position-sensing system for precise gate tracking, and a significantly faster motor delivering a 4-metre gate opening in under 12 seconds.
The "Evo" name is well-earned. While the original D5 relied on LED indicators and jumper-pin programming, the D5-Evo gives installers and homeowners a complete on-screen menu system with five main categories covering limits, remotes, general settings, diagnostics and advanced configuration. It is the first Centurion motor to display a real-time battery percentage and charge voltage — vital information during South Africa's ongoing load-shedding environment.
The D5-Evo Low-Voltage variant is identical in operation but replaces the standard 2A switched-mode charger with a CP84XTE voltage regulator/rectifier, making it suitable for solar and battery-only installations. If your property has no mains power, this is the model you need. Paskwa stocks and installs both variants — call 061 402 6299.
Exclusive Guide
DOSS System — Complete Deep-Dive
The DOSS (Digital Origin Seeking System) is the most misunderstood — and most important — part of the D5-Evo. This is the most complete DOSS explanation available anywhere in South Africa.
Why DOSS matters: The original D5 used simple magnetic limit switches that could drift or fail. DOSS replaced this with a dual-sensor system that gives the D5-Evo millimetre-accurate gate positioning on every single operation — enabling faster operation, softer stopping, precise crawl zones and reliable auto-close.
How DOSS Works — The Two-Part System
1. Optical Encoder Wheel
An optical encoder wheel is attached directly to the D5-Evo motor shaft inside the housing. As the motor rotates, the encoder counts pulses — typically hundreds per revolution — giving the controller a continuous, real-time count of exactly how many motor rotations have occurred since the gate started moving. This tells the controller where the gate currently is relative to where it started.
2. Origin Magnet + Sensor
A small magnet is fixed to the gate itself. A corresponding origin sensor (the DOSS sensor) is mounted on the motor housing. Every time the gate passes through the fully-closed position, the magnet passes the sensor and sends a zero-reset signal to the controller. This resets the pulse counter to zero, correcting any accumulated positioning drift. Without this reset, small errors would build up over hundreds of operations.
3. What DOSS Enables
The combination of pulse counting + origin reset enables: precise crawl-zone deceleration before endstops (preventing slamming), accurate pedestrian opening width, reliable collision force calculation, consistent auto-close timing, and the Diagnostics screen showing live gate position as a percentage. None of this was possible with the original D5.
4. Why DOSS Fails
The most common DOSS failure mode is oil contamination of the encoder wheel. If the gearbox oil seal fails or the gearbox is overfilled, oil migrates onto the encoder wheel and prevents accurate pulse counting. The controller then loses gate position, triggering "no origin detected" errors or erratic behaviour. Check for oil by running a finger on the encoder wheel after disengaging the gearbox.
How-To Guide
Centurion D5-Evo Installation — Step by Step
These steps are specific to the D5-Evo. Key differences from the original D5: DOSS origin magnet positioning is mandatory, and power-up prompts the ZA profile selection screen before limit setup.
Gate and Site Assessment
Push the gate manually — must slide freely with zero tight spots throughout full travel. Inspect wheel bearings (lift gate and spin each wheel). Verify rail is straight and gate weight is 500kg or less. Identify mounting position with gate fully closed.
Paskwa Pro Tip: Take 30 minutes to get the gate mechanics perfect before touching the motor. A stiff wheel or rough rack joint will cause DOSS collision errors from day one.
Foundation Plate Installation
Position the base plate so the support stud centre is 105mm from the gate edge (rack centre assumed 20mm from edge; base plate centre line 250mm off pillar centre). Prepare 4 holes for M10×95 studs. Place 2× M12 plated nuts per stud below the plate as spacers. Install conduit for cable routing — must protrude above concrete level.
Critical: Foundation plate must be level in both axes. Even 2mm of tilt causes the pinion to bind under load.
Gearbox Mounting
Fit M10 nuts 7mm clear from the foundation plate base. Mount gearbox. Set pinion-to-rack clearance: position initially touching rack, then drop gearbox 3mm to create correct clearance. Lock nuts once confirmed. Verify fan inside rotates freely.
Rack Installation
Weld rack to gate with angle iron brackets, parallel to rail, with 2–3mm gap to pinion. Grind rack joints flush — zero step between sections. Mount the origin magnet on the gate at the fully-closed position, 13–20mm from the DOSS origin sensor face, correct polarity facing sensor. Only one magnet on the gate.
Endstops, Guide-Rollers and Anti-Lift
Opening and closing endstops are mandatory — they provide the physical stall needed for D5-Evo limit setup to work. Without endstops, the automatic limit setup will fail. Fit guide-rollers. Install anti-lift brackets with <5mm gap to gate.
Electrical Cabling
Use SWA (steel wire armoured) cable for 220V mains — check municipal bylaws. Mains cables extend 450mm above concrete; signal cables 600mm. Connect all inputs per wiring diagram. Closing-left gate: black wire outside. Closing-right gate: blue wire outside.
IR Beams — critical: Always wire to SAFE COM, not normal COM. Wiring to normal COM with Beam Test enabled is the single most common reason gates refuse to operate after installation.
Power-Up and Profile Selection
Apply power. The D5-Evo LCD immediately shows the operating profile wizard. Select ZA for South Africa. The ZA profile sets the correct safety and operating standards — no beam test required before operation. CE and UL325 profiles perform beam tests before every operation; only select if required by client specification.
Automatic Limit Setup
After ZA selection, the system automatically enters Menu 1: Setting Limits. Follow the LCD prompts precisely. The gate will: run to the open endstop → slow reverse → run to close endstop → slow reverse → run at full speed until origin magnet reaches DOSS sensor → DOSS calibrates → gate closes fully. Confirm origin magnet gap is 13–20mm after setup. If setup fails, check endstops are installed and DOSS harness is connected.
Force Testing and Commissioning
Using a pull scale, test anti-crushing force in both directions. Set collision sensitivity so gate stops on a meaningful obstruction but doesn't false-trigger on wind or leaves. Programme remotes. Test: intercom trigger, pedestrian mode, IR beams, auto-close, FRX input. Verify 13.8V DC at battery terminals without load; above 11V DC under load.
Final DOSS check: Navigate to Menu 4: Diagnostics → Gate Position. With gate closed, position should show 0%. Open the gate — watch percentage rise. Close — watch return to 0%. If it doesn't return cleanly to 0%, the origin magnet setup needs adjustment.

Decode Your Fault
Centurion D5-Evo Beep Codes
The D5-Evo and D5 Smart use beep patterns to communicate fault codes. The original D5 uses simpler LED patterns. Count your beeps and find your fault below.
2 Short Beeps (repeating)
Mains power failure detected. The motor is running on battery backup only — load shedding or tripped breaker.
Action: Check if mains power is on. If load shedding — normal operation, no repair needed. If mains is on — check the breaker and fuse. Battery still operational.
3 Beeps (periodic)
Low battery warning. Battery voltage has dropped below safe threshold — the motor will fail during the next power outage.
Action: Replace battery within 2 weeks. R650–R950. Do not ignore — next load shedding outage will leave gate stuck.
4 Beeps every 10s
Collision detected or obstruction on track. The gate hit something, ran into an end stop, or DOSS detected a travel path anomaly.
Action: Check gate track for debris, stones, objects. Check gate rolls freely by hand. Clean and align safety beams. Call us if it persists.
Continuous single beep
Motor jammed, drive failure or end-stop fault. Gate is stuck mechanically or the motor drive circuit has failed — often after a power surge.
Action: Do not keep pressing the remote — this strains the motor. Use manual release key. Call 061 402 6299 — this needs a technician.

What is DOSS on the Centurion D5-Evo and how does it work?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CENTURION D5, D5-EVO AND D5 SMART?
The original D5 has no LCD, no DOSS and no surge protection — most vulnerable to load shedding. The D5-Evo adds an LCD display with error codes, full DOSS and improved board surge handling. The D5 Smart adds Bluetooth, Centurion Connect app control and remote diagnostics. All three handle gates up to 500kg.
What do all the beep codes on the Centurion D5-Evo mean?
How do I fix the "5 beeps" fault on my D5-Evo?
5 beeps × 30 seconds (repeating twice) indicates one of four critical faults. Check in this order: (1) DOSS harness — verify it is firmly connected at both the controller board and the DOSS sensor itself. A loose connector is the most common cause. (2) Fuse — check the 30A motor fuse on the control board. (3) Motor wires — ensure both motor wires are connected to their terminals. (4) Bridge damage — if all of the above check out, the motor bridge circuit on the control board is damaged. This requires a control board replacement. Call Paskwa on 061 402 6299 — we carry D5-Evo control boards and can replace same-day in Sandton.
How do I navigate the Centurion D5-Evo LCD menu?
The D5-Evo has five main menus: 1-Setting Limits, 2-Remotes, 3-General Settings, 4-Diagnostics, 5-Advanced Settings. Use the ▲▼ arrow buttons to scroll. Press the oblong Enter button to select. Press the round Exit button to go back. The most useful day-to-day menu is Menu 4: Diagnostics — it shows live battery voltage, charge rate, gate position percentage, beam status, input states and a fault log. See our full LCD Menu Walkthrough section above for every sub-menu explained.
Why won't my D5-Evo complete the limit setup?
The most common reasons limit setup fails on the D5-Evo: (1) Physical endstops not installed — the D5-Evo's DOSS limit setup requires the gate to physically stall against an endstop to detect the travel endpoint. Without endstops, the setup cannot complete. (2) DOSS harness disconnected — the DOSS must be connected for the controller to track gate position during setup. (3) Electric fence touching the gate frame — metal contact with an electric fence prevents the gate from running freely and stalls the motor mid-setup. (4) Oil in DOSS chamber preventing encoder from counting. Perform the DOSS oil contamination test described in our DOSS Deep-Dive section above.
How do I program a remote on the Centurion D5-Evo?
Navigate to Menu 2: Remotes → Add Remote. The receiver enters learn mode. Press the button on your Centurion NOVA or PENTA remote within 10 seconds. The LED flashes twice to confirm. You can store up to 250 remotes, each with an optional owner name for audit tracking. Before deleting or resetting remotes, always do a Memory Module Backup (Remotes → Memory Module → Backup) to save all programmed remotes. This saves hours of re-programming on large installations. If Holiday Lockout Mode is active, all remotes are disabled — check this first if remotes suddenly stop working.
Can I add my D5-Evo to Apple HomeKit or Google Home?
The standard D5-Evo does not have built-in smart home connectivity. Two options: (1) Upgrade to the D5-Evo Smart — adds Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with full Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings support via the MyCentsys app. (2) Add a Remootio 3 device to your existing D5-Evo — connect to the TRG and STATUS terminals, enabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth control plus smart home integration without replacing the motor. Paskwa supplies and configures both options — call 061 402 6299 for a free recommendation based on your specific setup.
HOW MUCH DOES A CENTURION D5-EVO BOARD REPLACEMENT COST?
A Centurion D5-Evo PCB control board replacement costs R2,200–R3,200 in Johannesburg including the board and labour. We also recommend a surge protector on the same callout (R450–R900) to prevent recurrence.
IS IT WORTH UPGRADING FROM A D5 TO A D5-EVO BOARD?
Yes. When replacing a damaged original D5 board, upgrading to D5-Evo spec costs only R400–R600 more and gives significantly better surge protection, an LCD display with error codes and full DOSS. Many Johannesburg D5 owners have had original boards replaced 2–3 times without this upgrade.
What is the difference between the D5-Evo and D5-Evo Low-Voltage?
The D5-Evo Low-Voltage is mechanically and electronically identical to the standard D5-Evo, with one important difference: it replaces the standard 2A switched-mode charger with a CP84XTE voltage regulator/rectifier. This makes it suitable for solar panel charging or battery-only installations where no 220V mains connection is available. The standard D5-Evo requires a 220V mains connection for battery charging. If your gate is in a remote location, is solar-powered, or experiences prolonged mains outages, the Low-Voltage variant is the better choice. Paskwa supplies and installs both — call 061 402 6299 for advice on which is right for your situation.
How do I reset the D5-Evo to factory settings?
Navigate to Menu 3: General Settings → Reset Options → Factory Defaults. This deletes all programmed remotes and restores all settings. Before doing this: (1) Back up remote memory via Remotes → Memory Module → Backup. (2) Note all custom settings (auto-close timer, pedestrian width, sensitivity). After reset: select ZA profile, re-run limit setup via Menu 1, restore remote memory via Remotes → Memory Module → Restore. The restore process re-adds all saved remotes in seconds. Never factory reset without a memory module backup unless you have all remote transmitters on-site for re-programming.
My D5-Evo charge rate shows below 80% in diagnostics — what does this mean?
