Overview
What is the Centurion D5 Gate Motor?
The Centurion D5 is South Africa's best-selling domestic sliding gate motor, manufactured by Centurion Systems — a proudly South African company automating gates since 1986. Walk down any street in Sandton, Johannesburg or Pretoria and you will find the D5 guarding driveways.
What separates the D5 from competitors is its battery-driven 12V DC motor. Unlike older AC-only motors, the D5 keeps your gate moving through every load-shedding stage — a critical advantage in South Africa's current energy environment. The motor handles gates up to 500kg and opens a 4-metre gate in under 12 seconds.
The D5 has evolved through four generations: the original D5 (pre-2013, LED-only programming), the D5-Evo (2013–present, full LCD display, faster operation), the D5-Evo Smart and the D5 Smart — both with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, compatible with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings via the MyCentsys Pro app.
How-To Guide
Centurion D5 Step-by-Step Installation
Follow these steps precisely. Incorrect installation is the number one cause of premature motor failure in South Africa.
Gate and Site Assessment
Push the gate manually — must slide freely with zero tight spots throughout full travel. Inspect wheel bearings (lift gate and spin each wheel). Verify rail is straight and gate weight is 500kg or less. Identify mounting position with gate fully closed.
Paskwa Pro Tip: 80% of D5 problems we attend in Sandton stem from a gate that was never properly aligned before installation. Spend 30 minutes on mechanical prep — it saves years of callouts.
Foundation Plate Installation
Position the base plate so the support stud centre is 105mm from the gate edge (rack centre assumed 20mm from edge; base plate centre line 250mm off pillar centre). Prepare 4 holes for M10×95 studs. Place 2× M12 plated nuts per stud below the plate as spacers. Install conduit for cable routing — must protrude above concrete level.
Critical: Foundation plate must be level in both axes. Even 2mm of tilt causes the pinion to bind under load.
Gearbox Mounting
Fit M10 nuts 7mm clear from the foundation plate base. Mount gearbox. Set pinion-to-rack clearance: position initially touching rack, then drop gearbox 3mm to create correct clearance. Lock nuts once confirmed. Verify fan inside rotates freely.
Rack Installation
Weld rack to gate using angle iron brackets, parallel to the rail. Maintain 2–3mm gap between rack and pinion teeth. For RAZ racks: place origin marker directly on top. For steel racks: use supplied bracket. Slide gate back and forth — mesh must feel smooth at every point in full travel. Grind any rack joint steps flush.
Endstops, Guide-Rollers and Anti-Lift
Fit opening and closing endstops (mandatory — gate death or injury without these). Make H1 > H2 to prevent gate jumping over endstop. Install guide-rollers to keep gate vertical. Fit anti-lift brackets with gap less than 5mm to gate.
Electrical Cabling
Use SWA (steel wire armoured) cable for 220V mains — check municipal bylaws. Mains cables extend 450mm above concrete; signal cables 600mm. Connect all inputs per wiring diagram. Closing-left gate: black wire outside. Closing-right gate: blue wire outside.
IR Beams — critical: Always wire to SAFE COM, not normal COM. Wiring to normal COM with Beam Test enabled is the single most common reason gates refuse to operate after installation.
Power-Up and Profile Selection
Apply power. LCD displays the profile setup wizard. Select ZA for South Africa. The ZA profile applies correct SA safety standards. CE (Europe) and UL325 (USA) perform a beam test before every gate operation — only select if required.
Automatic Limit Setup
System proceeds to Limit Setup automatically. Gate will: open to endstop → reverse → close → reverse → open quickly to origin sensor → calibrate → close. Verify origin marker gap is 13–20mm from sensor face after setup.
Force Testing and Commissioning
Use SWA (steel wire armoured) cable for 220V mains — check municipal bylaws. Mains cables extend 450mm above concrete; signal cables 600mm. Connect all inputs per wiring diagram. Closing-left gate: black wire outside. Closing-right gate: blue wire outside.
Battery check: Confirm 13.8V DC at battery terminals without load. Under load must stay above 11V DC. If it drops below 11V the battery may already be near end of life — even on a new installation.
Programming Guide
Centurion D5 Remote Programming
Method A — D5-Evo with LCD Screen
Access Remote Menu
Navigate to Remotes Menu → Add Remote using the ▲▼ navigation buttons. Press the oblong enter button to confirm.
Enter Learn Mode
Select Add — the receiver enters learn mode. The LED on the control board flashes once per second. You have 10 seconds.
Press Remote Button
Press and hold the button on your Centurion NOVA or PENTA remote. LED flashes twice rapidly to confirm successful programming.
Optional: Assign Owner Name
Navigate to Remotes Menu → Edit Remote to assign a user name. On D5 Smart, this creates an audit log — useful for security monitoring on estates.
Decode Your Fault
Centurion D5 Beeping? Count the Beeps — Read the Code
The D5-Evo and D5 Smart use beep patterns to communicate fault codes. The original D5 uses simpler LED patterns. Count your beeps and find your fault below.
2 Short Beeps (repeating)
Mains power failure detected. The motor is running on battery backup only — load shedding or tripped breaker.
Action: Check if mains power is on. If load shedding — normal operation, no repair needed. If mains is on — check the breaker and fuse. Battery still operational.
3 Beeps (periodic)
Low battery warning. Battery voltage has dropped below safe threshold — the motor will fail during the next power outage.
Action: Replace battery within 2 weeks. R650–R950. Do not ignore — next load shedding outage will leave gate stuck.
4 Beeps every 10s
Collision detected or obstruction on track. The gate hit something, ran into an end stop, or DOSS detected a travel path anomaly.
Action: Check gate track for debris, stones, objects. Check gate rolls freely by hand. Clean and align safety beams. Call us if it persists.
Continuous single beep
Motor jammed, drive failure or end-stop fault. Gate is stuck mechanically or the motor drive circuit has failed — often after a power surge.
Action: Do not keep pressing the remote — this strains the motor. Use manual release key. Call 061 402 6299 — this needs a technician.
Counted the beeps but still unsure? Call 061 402 6299 — we diagnose most Centurion D5 faults over the phone before dispatching. No call-out fee for phone diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions Centurion D5 Repairs Johannesburg
Centurion D5 Repairs Johannesburg
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO REPAIR A CENTURION D5 IN JOHANNESBURG?
Centurion D5 repairs in Johannesburg start at R350 for a remote reprogram and range to R4,500 for a D5 Smart logic board replacement. The most common repair — PCB board after load shedding — costs R1,800–R3,200 depending on model. We provide a free diagnosis and fixed written quote before starting any work. No call-out fee within Johannesburg.
WHY DID MY CENTURION D5 STOP WORKING AFTER LOAD SHEDDING?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CENTURION D5, D5-EVO AND D5 SMART?
The original D5 has no LCD, no DOSS and no surge protection — most vulnerable to load shedding. The D5-Evo adds an LCD display with error codes, full DOSS and improved board surge handling. The D5 Smart adds Bluetooth, Centurion Connect app control and remote diagnostics. All three handle gates up to 500kg.
WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD THE CENTURION D5 GATE MOTOR MANUAL PDF FOR FREE?
HOW DO I KNOW WHICH CENTURION D5 MODEL I HAVE?
Check the control board inside the motor housing lid. No display (only indicator lights) means the original D5. An LCD screen but no Bluetooth button means D5-Evo. An LCD screen plus a Bluetooth pairing button means D5 Smart. Send us a WhatsApp photo of the board — we identify it before dispatching.
HOW LONG DOES A CENTURION D5 LAST IN JOHANNESBURG?
A properly maintained D5-Evo or D5 Smart should last 15–20 years. The original D5 with no surge protection typically lasts 8–12 years in Johannesburg where load shedding is frequent. Annual gearbox servicing and a fitted surge protector are the two biggest lifespan factors.
SHOULD I REPAIR OR REPLACE MY CENTURION D5?
Repair if under 10 years old and this is the first or second board failure. Replace if over 12 years old, has had three board replacements, or the gearbox is grinding. We quote both options on every callout with honest advice — no pressure either direction.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN MY CENTURION D5 IS BEEPING?
2 beeps repeating = load shedding, running on battery (no repair needed). 3 beeps periodically = low battery warning, replace within 2 weeks. 4 beeps every 10 seconds = obstruction on track or DOSS collision detected. Continuous single beep = motor jammed or drive circuit failure, call us immediately.
HOW DO I RESET THE CENTURION D5 TO FACTORY SETTINGS?
D5-Evo with LCD: navigate to General Settings → Reset Options → Factory Defaults. This deletes all remotes and restores all factory settings. You must re-select the ZA profile, re-run limit setup and re-programme all remotes. Back up your memory module first. Older D5: remove power, remove all wire links, reapply power while holding the black run button. SAF OPN, SAF CLS and LCK LEDs illuminating confirms a successful reset.
HOW MUCH DOES A CENTURION D5-EVO BOARD REPLACEMENT COST?
A Centurion D5-Evo PCB control board replacement costs R2,200–R3,200 in Johannesburg including the board and labour. We also recommend a surge protector on the same callout (R450–R900) to prevent recurrence.
IS IT WORTH UPGRADING FROM A D5 TO A D5-EVO BOARD?
Yes. When replacing a damaged original D5 board, upgrading to D5-Evo spec costs only R400–R600 more and gives significantly better surge protection, an LCD display with error codes and full DOSS. Many Johannesburg D5 owners have had original boards replaced 2–3 times without this upgrade.
DO YOU CARRY CENTURION D5 SPARE PARTS IN STOCK?
Yes. We carry PCB boards for all three D5 generations, 7Ah batteries, remote receivers, remotes, capacitors, rack sections, limit switches and surge protectors in our service vehicles. Same-day repair without waiting for parts.
ARE YOU A CENTURION ACCREDITED INSTALLER IN JOHANNESBURG?
Yes. Paskwa Gate Repairs is a Centurion Systems accredited installer. Repairs are carried out to manufacturer specification, your motor warranty remains valid, and we use genuine Centurion parts.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SERVICE MY CENTURION D5 IN JOHANNESBURG?
Every 12 months for residential properties. The most critical service item is gearbox oil — degraded oil is the leading cause of preventable motor failure in Johannesburg. A R450–R900 annual service prevents R3,000–R9,000 gearbox repair bills.
