The voltage restoration spike when Eskom power returns destroys the PCB control board. The motor mechanism is virtually always intact — only the board fails. D5 batteries last 2–3 years under normal conditions. Frequent load shedding cycles accelerate discharge, shortening life to 18 months in some suburbs. A 3-beep repeating pattern is the warning. Ignoring it means the next outage will leave your gate stuck.

If all remotes stop working simultaneously, the receiver module is burned — almost always by a load shedding surge reaching the receiver circuit. If one remote stops but others work, the remote battery is flat or programming was lost after a board reset.

If the motor runs but the gate does not move, the gearbox pinion has stripped or the rack has lost engagement. Often caused by dry gearbox oil — a completely preventable fault that annual servicing eliminates entirely.

Causes include: obstruction on the track, dirty or misaligned IR safety beam, DOSS collision detection triggered by a track irregularity, or a limit switch fault. Check your beam lenses for spider webs or dirt before calling — this resolves 20% of these cases.

A gate that opens by itself without remote input is experiencing receiver frequency interference or has a faulty receiver module. Older fixed-code receivers are susceptible to signal bleed from neighbouring properties. Rolling-code receiver replacement solves this permanently

Mains power failure detected. The motor is running on battery backup only — load shedding or tripped breaker.

Low battery warning. Battery voltage has dropped below safe threshold — the motor will fail during the next power outage.

Collision detected or obstruction on track. The gate hit something, ran into an end stop, or DOSS detected a travel path anomaly.

Eskom cuts power. Your D5 switches to battery backup. Motor operates normally on 12V battery.

Eskom switches the grid back on. For 50–200 milliseconds, the supply voltage spikes well above 220V.

The PCB control board receives the spike. The original D5 board has no protection components — it absorbs the full voltage surge.

A tripped breaker looks identical to a board failure from outside the motor. Go to your DB board, find the breaker labelled "gate motor" or "outdoor", and reset it. If it trips again immediately — call us.

Loose connections cause complete power failure. Open the motor lid and push both terminals firmly onto the battery posts. If there is corrosion (white powder), clean it with a dry cloth. Test the remote.

Motor mounted on a level, solid concrete base plate — not on bricks or loose soil which shifts and misaligns the pinion gear against the rack.

Beams mounted on fixed posts at the correct height — not on moveable posts or gates themselves, which causes constant false collision errors.
