Nice ROBUS Gate Motor Repairs Johannesburg

Johannesburg's Nice ROBUS Repair Specialists

Nice is an Italian gate automation manufacturer with a strong presence in South Africa, sold locally under the Nice and Hansa brands. The ROBUS range — ROBUS 400, ROBUS 600 and ROBUS 1000 — covers the residential and light commercial sliding gate market from light to heavy-duty. Nice ROBUS motors are well regarded for their build quality, particularly the robust logic board which is more surge-tolerant than ET, DTS and older Centurion D5 boards.

Nice ROBUS's biggest advantage: The ROBUS logic board is one of the better-engineered control boards of any mid-range gate motor sold in South Africa. It is more tolerant of load-shedding restoration surges than ET or DTS equivalents, though still vulnerable to severe spikes without a surge protector. ROBUS motors also have a reputation for smoother, quieter operation than budget alternatives — a factor that matters on properties where the gate is used frequently.

One important point that causes confusion in Johannesburg: Nice TOONA is Nice's garage door motor — not a gate motor. If your motor is on a sliding or swing driveway gate, you have a ROBUS or similar Nice gate product. If it is on a tilting or sectional garage door, you have a TOONA or similar Nice garage door product. We repair both, but they are different ranges with different parts and fault profiles.

We carry Nice ROBUS logic boards, receiver modules, batteries and remotes in our service vehicles at all times for same-day repair across all of Johannesburg and Gauteng.

Nice ROBUS 600 Gate Motor

The Nice ROBUS 600 is a 24V DC residential sliding gate motor rated for gates up to 600kg. It is the most commonly installed Nice gate motor in Johannesburg, popular in upmarket residential properties and estate complexes where build quality matters more than budget price. It runs on a 24V system — giving it more torque and smoother operation than 12V budget alternatives — and its logic board has better surge tolerance than ET and DTS equivalents. The ROBUS 600 is often sold under the Hansa brand in South Africa.

Common Faults

Logic Board Failure

Load-shedding surge damage is the primary cause of Nice ROBUS 600 logic board failure. The ROBUS logic board is more surge-tolerant than ET and DTS equivalents — but severe restoration spikes, particularly during Stage 4–6 load shedding where multiple circuits re-energise simultaneously, can still destroy it. The motor winding and gearbox are almost always undamaged. We carry ROBUS 600 replacement logic boards in stock for same-day installation. Note: the ROBUS 600 runs on a 24V system using two 12V batteries — both must be replaced simultaneously if battery failure is also present.

Receiver Module Failure

The ROBUS 600 receiver module can fail independently of the main logic board — particularly from RF interference or a partial surge. Nice uses a rolling-code O-Code remote system — remotes must be programmed to the specific receiver and cannot be cloned. If the receiver fails, existing remotes will not work with a replacement receiver and must be reprogrammed. We carry ROBUS-compatible receivers and supply new remotes that we program on-site.

Battery Backup Failure (24V Pair)

The ROBUS 600 runs on a 24V DC system using two 12V sealed lead-acid batteries wired in series. Both batteries must be replaced at the same time — replacing only one causes the new battery to be dragged down by the old one, resulting in premature failure within weeks. Under Johannesburg's load-shedding conditions, expect battery replacement every 2–3 years. We replace both batteries as a matched pair on every ROBUS 600 callout.

Capacitor Failure

Despite the ROBUS 600's better build quality, starting capacitor failure still occurs — particularly on motors over 5 years old or those driving gates consistently at the upper end of the 600kg rating. Capacitor failure on a ROBUS 600 is less frequent than on Gemini or DTS, but when it occurs the symptom is identical: motor noise without gate movement. Quick, same-day repair.

Safety Sensor / Photo Eye Fault

The ROBUS 600's infrared safety beam reverses the gate if it detects an obstruction during closing. Misalignment — particularly after manual gate operation during load shedding — is the most common cause. Sensor realignment or replacement is a quick, affordable callout typically completed in under an hour.

Remote Programming Issues

Nice uses an O-Code rolling-code remote system. Programming new remotes to a ROBUS receiver requires a specific procedure — it is not as simple as pressing a button on the motor. After a receiver replacement, all remotes must be reprogrammed. We program Nice O-Code remotes on-site and supply Nice-compatible alternatives. Never buy a generic remote for a Nice ROBUS — rolling-code systems require genuine or specifically compatible remotes.

Nice ROBUS 1000 Gate Motor

The Nice ROBUS 1000 is the heavy-duty version of the ROBUS range, rated for gates up to 1,000kg on a 24V DC system. It is used across large residential properties, security estates, warehouses and commercial entrances throughout Johannesburg. Its higher-torque motor handles heavy gates smoothly and quietly — a key advantage in upmarket estate environments where noise is a consideration. Like the ROBUS 600, it uses two 12V batteries in series and shares the same logic board architecture.

Common Faults

Logic Board Failure

The ROBUS 1000 logic board is the same architecture as the ROBUS 600 but rated for the higher-torque demands of heavier gates. Load-shedding surge damage is the primary cause of failure. We carry ROBUS 1000 boards in stock for most configurations — call to confirm availability for your specific unit before dispatching.

Motor Winding Failure

Motor winding failure is more common on the ROBUS 1000 than on the 600 — because it is used on heavier gates with higher cycle requirements. Winding failure on commercial estate installations running 100+ daily cycles without adequate rack lubrication is the typical scenario. Signs include the motor running hot during operation and a faint burning smell from the motor housing. Winding repair is more expensive than a board replacement but far cheaper than a full motor replacement.

Battery Backup Failure (24V Pair)

Same 24V dual-battery system as the ROBUS 600 — two 12V batteries in series, both must be replaced simultaneously. On commercial estate installations where the gate runs continuously, battery lifespan can drop to 18 months. We always replace both batteries as a matched pair and test the charging circuit before leaving site.

Gearbox Service / Wear

The ROBUS 1000 gearbox is robust but will show wear on very high-use estate and commercial gates without regular lubrication. Early symptoms — a slight grinding sound and minor play in the gate's movement — can be resolved with a service and re-lubrication (R650–R1,200). Left untreated, gearbox wear progresses to full drive failure. We recommend annual servicing on all ROBUS 1000 commercial installations.

Nice ROBUS 400 Gate Motor

The Nice ROBUS 400 is the entry-level model in the ROBUS range, rated for sliding gates up to 400kg. It is used in smaller residential properties and cluster home complexes where the gate is lighter and the daily cycle count is lower. The ROBUS 400 is a 12V DC motor — unlike the 600 and 1000 which are 24V — making it simpler and slightly less expensive to repair. Its most common fault is battery failure under load-shedding conditions

Common Faults

Battery Backup Failure

The most common ROBUS 400 fault in Johannesburg. The 12V 7Ah battery depletes faster than the larger 12Ah batteries in Gemini motors or the dual 24V systems in ROBUS 600 and 1000. Under load-shedding conditions, expect replacement every 12–18 months. Test by switching off your DB mains and trying the remote. We carry ROBUS 400 batteries in stock for same-day replacement.

Logic Board Failure

The ROBUS 400 logic board has the same surge vulnerability as the larger ROBUS models — but because it is a 12V system with a smaller battery, the surge buffer is lower than the 24V dual-battery models. Board replacement is straightforward and parts are readily available.

Motor Overload

The ROBUS 400 is frequently installed on gates approaching or exceeding its 400kg rating. An overloaded motor trips its thermal protection and stops after a few cycles. If the fault repeats after the motor cools, overloading is almost certainly the cause. We assess whether the gate can be lightened or recommend upgrading to the ROBUS 600.

Remote / Receiver Fault

The ROBUS 400 uses Nice's O-Code rolling-code remote system. Receiver failure or lost remote programming are the most common non-battery faults. We supply and program Nice-compatible remotes on-site. After any receiver replacement, all remotes must be reprogrammed — existing remotes are not automatically compatible with a new receiver.

Nice Era/TOONA Gate Motor

Nice produces two other products commonly seen in Johannesburg alongside the ROBUS sliding gate range: the Nice Era swing gate motor and the Nice TOONA garage door motor. These are different products from the ROBUS sliding gate motors and have different fault profiles, parts, and repair procedures. If you are unsure which Nice product you have, send us a photo via WhatsApp to 061 402 6299 and we will identify it before dispatching

Common Faults

Nice Era — Actuator Arm Failure

The Nice Era is Nice's residential swing gate motor — it uses a linear actuator arm to push and pull the gate leaf. The actuator is a hydraulic unit on some models and an electromechanical unit on others. Hydraulic actuator seal failure causes the gate to lose closing force over time. Electromechanical actuator failure typically manifests as stalling midway through travel. We carry Nice Era actuator components for the most common models. Call to confirm parts availability for your specific unit before dispatching.

Nice Era — Logic Board Failure

The Nice Era control board manages the synchronisation between the two motors on a double-leaf swing gate installation. Load-shedding surge damage is the primary cause. A board failure on one motor on a double-leaf installation typically stops both gates — the synchronisation system prevents either motor from operating independently. We carry Era boards for most configurations.

Nice TOONA — Logic Board Failure

The Nice TOONA is a garage door motor, not a gate motor. It drives a tilting or sectional garage door via a chain or belt drive. Load-shedding surge damage to the TOONA logic board causes complete loss of remote and button response. The TOONA board is different from any ROBUS board — make sure your technician has TOONA-specific parts before dispatching. We carry TOONA boards for the most common models.

Nice TOONA — Remote / Receiver Fault

The TOONA uses Nice's O-Code rolling-code remote system — the same as the ROBUS gate motor range. Receiver failure or lost programming are common after load-shedding surges. We supply and program TOONA-compatible O-Code remotes on-site. After receiver replacement, existing remotes must be reprogrammed to the new receiver.

Not sure which brand you have? Send a photo via WhatsApp to 061 402 6299 and we will identify your motor and quote before dispatching.

Nice ROBUS Gate Motor Repairs Johannesburg Most Asked Comparison

ROBUS 400 vs ROBUS 600 vs ROBUS 1000

Paskwa Gate Repairs recommendation:

For standard Johannesburg residential driveways, the ROBUS 600 is the sweet spot — its 24V system handles most residential gates comfortably and its dual-battery backup provides good load-shedding resilience. For gates over 600kg, always specify the ROBUS 1000. For any ROBUS model, add a surge protector on installation (R450–R900 fitted) — even the better-engineered ROBUS board is not immune to severe load-shedding restoration surges.

Nice ROBUS Gate Motor Repairs Johannesburg Maintenance Guide

Nice ROBUS Maintenance — Johannesburg

Nice ROBUS motors are well built — but the right maintenance maximises their lifespan and keeps repair costs low in Johannesburg's load-shedding environment.

Annual service for ROBUS 1000 commercial installations

The ROBUS 1000 on estate and commercial installations — running 50–200 daily cycles — accumulates wear significantly faster than a residential gate. An annual service covering rack lubrication, gearbox inspection, battery health check, board inspection, and safety beam alignment prevents the kind of progressive wear that leads to expensive unplanned failures at the worst possible time. We offer annual service contracts for estate and commercial clients across Johannesburg.

Install a surge protector — even ROBUS needs one

The Nice ROBUS logic board is more surge-tolerant than ET, DTS and older Centurion D5 boards — but it is not immune to severe restoration surges during Stage 4–6 load shedding. A surge protector on the motor's power input (R450–R900) absorbs the voltage spike before it reaches the board. Given the ROBUS board replacement cost of R1,200–R4,000, a surge protector is a compelling one-time investment. We install these during repair callouts — ask when you call.

Replace both 24V batteries simultaneously

The ROBUS 600 and ROBUS 1000 run on a 24V system using two 12V batteries in series. This is their greatest maintenance quirk: when one battery degrades, it draws the other down rapidly. Replacing only one battery means the new battery is discharged by the old one within weeks — resulting in a repeat callout and double the cost. Always replace both batteries at the same time. Under Johannesburg's load-shedding conditions, expect to replace every 2–3 years for the 600 and 18–24 months for heavy-use 1000 installations.

Only use Nice O-Code compatible remotes

Nice's O-Code rolling-code remote system is proprietary. Generic remotes from hardware stores will not work with the ROBUS receiver. After any receiver replacement, all remotes — including existing ones — must be reprogrammed to the new receiver. Using a non-compatible remote is the most common cause of "my remote doesn't work" callouts that turn out not to be a fault at all. We supply genuine Nice O-Code remotes and program them on-site.

Lubricate the rack and pinion every 6 months

Apply heavy-duty gear grease to the rack teeth and drive pinion every 6 months. Not WD-40 — it is a solvent that strips existing grease. An unlubricated rack forces the ROBUS motor to work harder, increases heat and current draw, and accelerates capacitor and gearbox wear. The ROBUS 1000's gearbox is particularly sensitive to insufficient lubrication under heavy commercial use — we recommend 3-monthly lubrication on estate and commercial installations.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Nice ROBUS Repairs Johannesburg

How much does Nice ROBUS gate motor repair cost in Johannesburg?

Nice ROBUS repairs range from R350 for a remote reprogram to R5,500 for a full motor supply and installation. The most common repair — logic board replacement after load-shedding surge damage — costs R1,200–R3,000 for the ROBUS 600. Battery pair replacement is R1,100–R1,800 (both 12V batteries must be replaced simultaneously on 24V models). We provide a free diagnosis and quote before starting any work. Call 061 402 6299.

Why did my Nice ROBUS stop after load shedding?
The voltage surge when electricity is restored after load shedding can destroy the ROBUS logic board. The ROBUS board is more surge-tolerant than ET or DTS equivalents — but not immune to severe Stage 4–6 restoration spikes. If your ROBUS is completely unresponsive with no LED activity after load shedding, the logic board has failed. We carry ROBUS replacement boards in stock for same-day repair. A surge protector (R450–R900 fitted) prevents recurrence.
What is the difference between Nice ROBUS 400, 600 and 1000?

ROBUS 400: 12V DC, gates up to 400kg, single battery, lowest price. ROBUS 600: 24V DC, gates up to 600kg, dual 12V battery system, most popular residential model. ROBUS 1000: 24V DC, gates up to 1000kg, dual battery, suited to estates and commercial use. For standard Johannesburg driveways, the ROBUS 600 is the right choice. For heavier gates or high-traffic applications, specify the ROBUS 1000.

What is the difference between Nice ROBUS and Nice TOONA?
Nice ROBUS is a sliding gate motor range. Nice TOONA is Nice's garage door motor — used on tilting or sectional garage doors, not on driveway gates. They are different products with different boards, parts and fault profiles. If your motor is on a driveway gate, you have a ROBUS or similar Nice gate product. If it is on a garage door, you have a TOONA or similar Nice garage door product. We repair both. Send a photo via WhatsApp to 061 402 6299 if you are unsure which you have.
Why won't my Nice ROBUS remote work with the new receiver?

Nice uses an O-Code rolling-code remote system. After any receiver replacement, all existing remotes must be reprogrammed to the new receiver — they do not automatically transfer. If you have received a new receiver but your old remotes still don't work, they need to be reprogrammed. We reprogram all Nice O-Code remotes on-site and can supply new remotes if needed. Never buy generic remotes for a Nice ROBUS — they are not compatible with the O-Code rolling-code system.

Do I need to replace both batteries on a Nice ROBUS 600?

Yes — always replace both batteries simultaneously on the ROBUS 600 and ROBUS 1000. Both models run on a 24V system using two 12V batteries wired in series. If one battery is degraded and you replace only one, the new battery is immediately discharged by the old one — resulting in premature failure within weeks and a repeat callout. We always replace both batteries as a matched pair. Battery pair replacement costs R1,100–R1,800.

Is Nice ROBUS better than Centurion for Johannesburg?

Both are good motors for Johannesburg with different strengths. The Nice ROBUS 600 has a more surge-tolerant logic board than the original Centurion D5. The Centurion D5-Evo has built-in Guardian mode load-shedding protection that the ROBUS does not. The ROBUS runs on a 24V system which gives smoother, quieter operation. The Centurion is the dominant brand in Johannesburg, meaning wider technician availability and faster parts sourcing. For quiet, smooth operation in an upmarket estate, the ROBUS 600 or 1000 is an excellent choice. For load-shedding protection built into the motor, the D5-Evo has the edge. Add a surge protector to either motor on installation.
