Before Anything Else
Try This First — Resolves 40% of Remote Faults in 2 Minutes
Before calling a technician, try these two checks. They resolve nearly half of all remote fault callouts we attend — and they cost nothing.
Check 1 — Replace the Remote Battery
The most common cause of a non-working gate remote in Johannesburg is a flat battery. Even a battery that shows voltage on a meter can fail under the transmit load. Centurion NOVA remotes use a CR2032 coin battery. Many other remotes use an A23 12V battery. Both are available from any hardware store or Checkers for R15–R40.
Resolves approximately 40% of all remote fault callouts. Do this before anything else.
Check 2 — Test Range and Direction
Walk to within 2 metres of the motor and point the remote directly at the motor's antenna wire (usually hanging from the motor housing). Press the button. If the gate now responds, you have a range or signal strength problem — not a component failure. This is caused by a weak remote battery, RF interference, or a loose antenna wire on the receiver board.
If the gate responds at 2 metres but not at normal distance — replace the remote battery first. If a new battery does not restore range, the receiver antenna needs attention.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis
Step Remote Fault Diagnostic — Work Through These in Order
Work through these steps in sequence. Each step either resolves the fault or rules out a cause, narrowing you down to the exact problem without guesswork.
Test the Gate Motor Button Directly
Open the motor housing and press the test button on the PCB board itself (not the remote). If the gate moves — the motor is working and the problem is the remote or receiver. If the gate does not move from the board button — this is not a remote issue, it is a motor fault (battery, PCB, or power).
Replace the Remote Battery
Replace the battery in the non-working remote — CR2032 for Centurion NOVA, A23 12V for many others. Test the remote again at normal distance. A flat battery is the cause of approximately 40% of remote fault callouts. Always use a fresh brand-name battery — cheap batteries from informal traders can test at full voltage but fail under transmit load.
Test All Other Remotes
Test every other remote you have for the gate. If some work and only one specific remote is dead — the problem is that individual remote (lost programming or faulty). If ALL remotes are dead simultaneously — the receiver module inside the motor is burned or the motor had a board reset that wiped all remote codes.
Attempt to Reprogram the Dead Remote
If the motor had a board reset (common after load shedding surges that reset the PCB to factory defaults), all remotes lose their programming. Use the motor's LCD menu to add the remote back. For Centurion D5-Evo: hold the oblong button 2 seconds → Remote Controls → Add Remote → select function → press the remote button. For D5 Smart: use the MyCentsysPro app.
Check for Holiday Lockout or Frequency Interference
If specific remotes do nothing but the gate button works and other remotes work normally: check Holiday Lockout is not activated on those remotes via the LCD menu. If the gate operates randomly without pressing any remote: frequency interference from a neighbour's motor on the same fixed code is the cause — rolling code upgrade eliminates this permanently.
Root Cause Analysis
8 Reasons Your Gate Motor Remote Is Not Working
Every gate motor remote failure in Johannesburg falls into one of these 8 categories. Identify yours and you know exactly what the fix costs and how long it takes.
Flat Remote Battery
The most common cause by far. A CR2032 or A23 battery can test at correct voltage on a meter but fail under the high-current transmit load when the remote button is pressed. Cheap batteries from informal traders are especially prone to this.
Fix: Replace battery with a name-brand CR2032 or A23 from any hardware store or Checkers
Remote Lost Programming After Board Reset
Load shedding voltage restoration spikes sometimes reset the PCB to factory defaults, wiping all stored remote codes. The gate works from the motor button but all remotes are dead. The receiver is fine — the codes simply need to be re-entered via the LCD menu.
Fix: Reprogram remotes via LCD menu (D5-Evo) or MyCentsysPro app (D5 Smart). Or call 061 402 6299 — R350 fitted.
Burned Receiver Module
The voltage restoration spike during load shedding reaches the receiver module and destroys it. All remotes go dead simultaneously — and no reprogram will fix it because the receiver hardware is physically damaged. Very common after severe Johannesburg load shedding cycles.
Fix: Receiver module replacement by technician. We carry all major brand receivers in stock for same-day repair.
RF Interference / Frequency Conflict
Fixed-code remotes operating on the same frequency as a neighbour's recently installed motor can cause your gate to stop responding to your remote — or to open randomly. This is increasingly common in dense Johannesburg suburbs where many motors are installed close together.
Fix: Upgrade to rolling-code (KeeLoq) remotes. Each press generates a unique encrypted code — immune to frequency conflicts.
Holiday Lockout Activated
Centurion D5-Evo and D5 Smart have a Holiday Lockout feature that prevents specific remotes from operating during set periods. If this is accidentally activated during a programming session, the affected remotes stop working completely while the gate still responds to the motor button.
Fix: Navigate to Remote Controls → Holiday Lockout → Off via the LCD menu, or use the MyCentsysPro app. Free to fix yourself.
Antenna Wire Loose or Corroded
The receiver's antenna wire (typically hanging from the motor housing) can become loose, corroded, or broken. This reduces the effective reception range to almost zero. Gate only responds when the remote is held right next to the motor but not from normal distance.
Fix: Re-seat or replace the antenna wire connection on the receiver board. Clean corrosion at the terminal if present.
Remote Memory Full — Centurion Only
Centurion D5-Evo stores up to 500 remote codes. In large estates with high turnover of residents, the memory can reach capacity. New remotes cannot be programmed until old codes are deleted. Very common in Johannesburg security estates where many residents have left.
Fix: Delete old/unused remote codes via the LCD menu → Remote Controls → Delete Remote. Then add the new remote code.
Faulty or Dead Remote Transmitter
The remote transmitter itself has failed. The circuit board inside the remote is damaged (common from being dropped, water exposure, or age). A new battery makes no difference. The remote feels responsive when pressed but transmits no signal at all.
Fix: Replacement remote supplied and programmed to your motor. We carry Centurion NOVA, Gemini, ET Drive, DTS and other brand remotes in stock.
Step-by-Step Programming
Gate Motor Remote Programming Guide — By Brand
Step-by-step programming instructions for every major gate motor brand in Johannesburg. Select your brand below. If these steps do not work, the receiver module is likely damaged — call us.
Centurion D5-Evo Remote Programming
The D5-Evo uses the LCD display menu for all remote programming. You need physical access to the motor housing. The process takes under 2 minutes per remote.
- Press and hold the oblong (centre) button on the PCB for approximately 2 seconds until "Setting Limits" appears on the LCD display.
- Press the up arrow button once. "Remote Controls (Tx)" appears on the screen.
- Press and release the oblong (centre) button to enter the Remote Controls menu. "Add Remote" appears on screen.
- Press and release the oblong button to confirm "Add Remote".
- The LCD asks what function you want — Trigger (open/close), Pedestrian, Holiday Lockout, or Courtesy Light. Select your function with the arrow buttons, then confirm with oblong button.
- Press the button on your remote that you want to program. The LCD confirms "Remote Learned" with a flash.
- Press the round button twice to exit Programming Mode. Test the remote from outside.
If "Remote Learned" does not appear: The remote is not being recognised — either the remote is faulty, the wrong remote type, or the receiver module is damaged. Call 061 402 6299.
Centurion D5 Smart Remote Programming
The D5 Smart can be programmed via the LCD menu (same as D5-Evo above) OR via the MyCentsysPro app on Android or iOS — the easier method for most homeowners.
- Download and open the MyCentsysPro app (Android or iOS). Ensure your phone Bluetooth is on and you are within 5 metres of the motor.
- Connect to your D5 Smart by pressing the Bluetooth button on the PCB board until the Bluetooth LED flashes. Select your motor in the app.
- Navigate to Remote Controls → Add Remote in the app.
- Select the function (Trigger, Pedestrian, Holiday Lockout, or Aux).
- Press the button on the physical remote that you want to program. The app confirms "Remote Added" with a notification.
- Test the remote. If it does not work after app programming, exit the app, press the remote button again, and re-test.
D5 Smart advantage: You can manage all remotes remotely via the app — delete lost/stolen remotes by ID without physical access to the motor. Highly recommended for estates and rental properties.
Centurion D5 Original Remote Programming
The original Centurion D5 (no LCD screen) uses a simpler programming method — the Learn button on the PCB. No display, but the process is straightforward.
- Open the motor housing and locate the "Learn" or "Programme" button on the PCB control board.
- Press and release the Learn button once. The green LED on the board should begin flashing, indicating the board is in programming mode.
- Within 30 seconds, press the button on your remote that you want to program. Hold it for 1–2 seconds.
- The LED on the board flashes to confirm the remote has been learned. If it does not flash — try again from step 2.
- Press the Learn button again to exit programming mode. Test the remote.
Upgrade recommendation: The original D5 uses an older board generation with no surge protection. When replacing a remote or receiver, consider upgrading to D5-Evo spec. Call 061 402 6299 for advice
ET Drive 500 / 1000 Remote Programming
ET Drive gate motors use a Learn button on the PCB. The ET Drive receiver is particularly surge-vulnerable — if all remotes stopped working after load shedding, the receiver is likely burned and programming will not fix it.
- Open the ET Drive motor housing and locate the Programme or Learn button on the PCB (usually labelled P or PROG).
- Press and hold the Learn button until the receiver LED lights up or flashes, indicating programming mode is active.
- Press and release the button on your ET Drive remote. The LED should flash to confirm the remote code has been stored.
- Press the Learn button again to exit programming mode. Test the remote.
ET Drive receiver vulnerability: The ET Drive PCB receiver circuit is more fragile than Centurion under load shedding surges. If remote programming fails after a load shedding event, the receiver module is likely physically damaged. Receiver replacement: R700–R1,200. Call 061 402 6299.
Gemini Gate Motor Remote Programming
Gemini gate motors use a Learn button on the PCB for remote programming. The Gemini also supports remote-to-remote cloning for compatible fixed-code remotes.
- Open the motor housing and locate the Learn button on the green PCB control card.
- Press and hold the Learn button until the receiver LED flashes — this puts the board in learning mode.
- Press and hold the button on your Gemini remote that you want to program. Hold until the receiver LED flashes twice — this confirms successful programming.
- Release both buttons and test the remote from outside the motor housing. The gate should respond.
Gemini remote-to-remote cloning: If you have a working Gemini remote, a second compatible remote can be cloned side-by-side without accessing the motor — press and hold corresponding buttons on both remotes simultaneously until the LED on the new remote confirms. Does NOT work with rolling code remotes.
DTS Elite 600 / Arrow Remote Programming
DTS gate motors use a Learn button on the PCB. Up to 31 transmitters can be programmed. DTS also supports a "party mode" and pedestrian access function on the remote. Note: the DTS receiver is frequently damaged by load shedding surges.
- Open the DTS motor housing and locate the Learn or Code button on the receiver PCB.
- Press and hold the Learn button until the receiver LED turns on, indicating learning mode is active.
- Press the button on your DTS remote that you want to program and hold it until the receiver LED flashes to confirm successful learning.
- For pedestrian access, press the pedestrian button on the remote during step 3. The motor will only open halfway for pedestrian entry.
- Release and exit learning mode by pressing the Learn button again. Test the remote.
DTS receiver damage: If remote programming fails after a load shedding event, or if you get a continuous beep from the DTS motor — the PCB is likely damaged, not just the remote. Call 061 402 6299 for phone diagnosis before spending time on programming attempts.
Nice ROBUS 600 / 1000 Remote Programming
The Nice ROBUS uses the BlueBUS system and a Learn button on the control unit. Nice ERA and Nice ONE remotes are compatible. The programming process confirms via the BlueBUS LED.
- Open the ROBUS motor cover and locate the PP (memorisation) button on the control unit PCB.
- Press and release the PP button once. The BlueBUS LED emits two quick flashes, indicating the receiver is in programming mode.
- Within 10 seconds, press and hold the button on your Nice remote that you want to program. Hold until the BlueBUS LED flashes twice to confirm.
- Programming mode exits automatically after 10 seconds of no input. Test the remote.
Nice ERA remotes: Nice ERA Inti, ERA One, ERA Flor and ERA Flor remotes are compatible with ROBUS 600 and 1000. If your remote is a different brand, it may not be compatible. Check the remote label — it must say Nice or ERA.
Security Warning — Johannesburg Homeowners
Fixed Code Remotes Are a Security Risk in Johannesburg
Many Johannesburg homes still use older fixed-code gate remotes. These can be cloned by criminals using cheap handheld scanners sold online. Here is what you need to know and what to do about it.
Rolling Code (KeeLoq) Remotes — Secure
- Generate a unique encrypted code on every press
- Each code is only valid once — cannot be replayed
- Mathematically impossible to clone with current technology
- KeeLoq encryption — same standard used in car keys
- No frequency conflict with neighbouring motors
- Lost remotes deleted by ID — no need to reprogram all
- Standard on all current Centurion NOVA remotes
Fixed Code Remotes — Security Risk
- Send the same signal every single press
- Can be captured by a R300 handheld scanner
- Captured signal can open your gate indefinitely
- Criminal records your signal from a passing car
- Returns later and uses captured code to enter
- No way to know a clone exists until you are burgled
- Also causes frequency conflicts with neighbours
Customer Reviews
Johannesburg Homeowners We Helped
"All my Centurion D5-Evo remotes stopped working after load shedding. Called Paskwa — they diagnosed a burned receiver module over the phone in 2 minutes, came out same day, replaced it and reprogrammed all 4 remotes. Total time on site was 45 minutes. Very professional."
"My gate was opening by itself randomly — terrifying from a security perspective. Paskwa identified the issue as fixed-code frequency interference from a new neighbour's installation, upgraded us to rolling code remotes. Gate has not opened by itself since. Should have done it years ago."
"Called Paskwa about a remote that stopped working. They suggested I try replacing the battery before booking a callout — a R25 CR2032 from Checkers fixed it completely. They were honest enough to suggest the free fix first rather than take a callout fee. Earned a customer for life."
Frequently Asked Questions
Gate Motor Battery Replacement — Johannesburg FAQ
WHY IS MY GATE MOTOR REMOTE NOT WORKING?
The most common causes are: flat remote battery (try this first — resolves 40% of cases); remote lost programming after a board reset; burned receiver module after load shedding; holiday lockout activated; RF frequency interference; loose antenna wire; or a dead remote transmitter. Follow the 5-step diagnostic on this page or call 061 402 6299 for free phone diagnosis.
HOW DO I REPROGRAM MY CENTURION GATE MOTOR REMOTE?
HOW MUCH DOES GATE MOTOR REMOTE REPAIR COST IN JOHANNESBURG?
Remote battery replacement: R15–R40 DIY from hardware store. Remote reprogram: R350 by technician. New remote supply and program: R450–R700. Receiver module replacement (all remotes dead after surge): R700–R1,400. Rolling code remote upgrade (pair): R650–R950. All prices include diagnosis. No call-out fee within Johannesburg.
WHY DID MY GATE REMOTE STOP WORKING AFTER LOAD SHEDDING?
WHAT SIZE BATTERY DOES MY GATE MOTOR USE?
Centurion D5, D5-Evo, D5 Smart, ET Drive 500, DTS Elite: 12V 7Ah. Centurion D10 Smart, Gemini Slider: 12V 12Ah. Nice ROBUS 600 and 1000: two 12V 12Ah batteries (24V dual system — both must be replaced together). Gemini Pro 24V: two 12V 12Ah batteries. Send us a WhatsApp photo of your motor — we confirm the size before dispatching.
WHY DOES MY GATE MOTOR BATTERY KEEP DYING QUICKLY?
Three main causes: (1) Load shedding — twice-daily discharge cycles exhaust a 7Ah lead-acid battery's 150-cycle design life in months. (2) Faulty charging circuit — a PCB damaged by a surge may not charge the battery correctly between outages. (3) Wrong battery size — an undersized battery on a heavy gate drains faster. We check all three on every battery callout at no extra charge.
CAN A GATE MOTOR REMOTE BE CLONED OR COPIED?
Fixed-code (dip switch) remotes can be cloned. Rolling code (KeeLoq) remotes like Centurion NOVA cannot be cloned — they generate a unique encrypted code on every press that is only valid once. If you need an extra Centurion NOVA remote, it must be programmed via the motor's receiver board. We strongly recommend upgrading from fixed-code to rolling code remotes — fixed-code remotes can be scanned by criminals using cheap handheld devices.
MY GATE REMOTE WORKS SOMETIMES BUT NOT ALWAYS — WHAT IS WRONG?
Intermittent remote failure is caused by: weak remote battery failing under transmit load (replace first — even batteries showing voltage can fail); RF interference from a nearby device on the same frequency; loose or corroded antenna wire on the receiver board; or a receiver module that is partially damaged and failing intermittently. Call 061 402 6299 for phone diagnosis — we identify the cause before dispatching.
WHAT IS HOLIDAY LOCKOUT AND HOW DO I TURN IT OFF?
Holiday lockout is a Centurion D5-Evo and D5 Smart security feature that prevents specific remotes from operating the gate during set periods. If active, affected remotes do nothing while the gate still works from the motor button or a master remote. To disable: navigate to LCD menu → Remote Controls → Holiday Lockout → Off. On D5 Smart, use the MyCentsysPro app. Call 061 402 6299 if you cannot access the menu.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ROLLING CODE AND FIXED CODE GATE REMOTE?
Fixed code remotes send the same signal every press — they can be captured and cloned by criminals using cheap scanners. Rolling code (KeeLoq) remotes generate a unique encrypted code on every press that is only valid once — cloning is technically impossible. If your motor uses fixed code remotes, upgrading to rolling code is a significant security improvement we recommend on any service callout. Cost: R650–R950 for a rolling code pair.
HOW MANY REMOTES CAN A CENTURION D5 LEARN?
Centurion D5 Original and D5-Evo: up to 500 CENTURION NOVA rolling code remotes. Centurion D5 Smart: up to 1,500 remotes. Each remote is assigned a unique ID, allowing individual deletion without affecting others. In large Johannesburg estates with high resident turnover, the 500-remote limit on D5-Evo can be reached — clearing old IDs may be the fix for a remote that suddenly stopped working.
CAN I PROGRAM A GATE REMOTE MYSELF OR DO I NEED A TECHNICIAN?
For Centurion D5-Evo with LCD screen, an experienced homeowner can add a remote via the LCD menu. For D5 Smart, the MyCentsysPro app makes it very straightforward. However, if ALL remotes stopped working simultaneously (receiver module fault), no amount of reprogramming will fix it — you need a technician. Call 061 402 6299 for free phone diagnosis before spending time on programming attempts.
MY GATE OPENS RANDOMLY BY ITSELF — IS THIS A REMOTE PROBLEM?
Yes — a gate that opens by itself without any remote press is a receiver fault. Common causes: a fixed-code remote frequency conflict with a neighbour's motor (very common in dense Johannesburg suburbs); a faulty receiver triggering on background RF noise; or a short circuit on the trigger terminal. Rolling code (KeeLoq) upgrade permanently eliminates frequency conflicts. Faulty receiver costs R700–R1,400 to replace. Call 061 402 6299.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY GATE REMOTE BATTERY NEEDS REPLACING?
Signs of a weak remote battery: gate only responds when very close to the motor; response is intermittent; LED on the remote is dim or does not light up when pressed; gate responds when the remote is pointed directly at the motor antenna from close range but not from normal distance. Centurion NOVA remotes use CR2032. Most other brands use A23 12V. Always try the battery first — resolves approximately 40% of remote fault calls.
